Opiate For the Masses Week: Day 4 "Lie"

07/10/2008
.
(antiMusic) This week industrial metal heavyweights Opiate for the Masses' new album 'Manifesto' hits stores at long last via Century Media records. To celebrate the release we asked frontman Ron Underwood to pick his favorite tracks from the effort and tell us a little bit about each one. Here is Ron with today's song:

Lie- This song is about certain people who enjoy pulling others into their promises just long enough to break them for some sort of power trip. Its original title was "Sandcastle" and I'm sure it captures an experience familiar to pretty much everybody.

It started out as a really odd series of loops and samples. Producer John Travis set out to challenge us with some bizarre notions: in his British accent he said something like, "Take some influences that are so far out of your comfort zone that you don't think it will ever work. Then make it work." We went with something like Kanye West or in that vein, and we got these really danceable beats. We threw this sparse, όber metal guitar riff and some squelching bass hits over the verse, went four-on-the-floor disco metal in the chorus, and then threw in a spacey, oboe-laden bridge. It's really original. I love performing this one live; the crowd really goes apesh*t for the beats.
