Free Radiohead No More

(antiMusic) Last year Radiohead made music history when they broke all of the rules and offered a download of their album under a "pay what you want" model. The free downloads didn't seem to hurt the band's sales because when the album hit stores, it went straight to No. 1 in the US and UK. But now the band's frontman says that fans shouldn't expect them to do it again.Flashback to last October. Radiohead had just finished their album "In Rainbows" and having fulfilled their commitment to EMI, they didn't have a label to put the album out. So they decided to break the rules and offer the album to fans at whatever price the fans wanted to pay. Frontman Thom Yorke now tells the Hollywood Reporter of that decision, "I think it was a one-off response to a particular situation". "Yes. It was a one-off in terms of a story. It was one of those things where we were in the position of everyone asking us what we were going to do. I don't think it would have the same significance now anyway, if we chose to give something away again. It was a moment in time," Yorke said. Fortunately the band is in a position where they can break every rule in the music playbook... and win. So it will interesting what they come up with next. - Read the Hollywood Reporter story
