Manic Makeover

(PR) Manic's atmospheric rock has received an electronic makeover courtesy of Faint bassist Joel Petersen's nom de plume, Broken Spindles. The sole knob tweaker for this electro side-project has remixed the L.A. band's track, "Carolina Ghost," off their forthcoming EP, ANOTHER NEW HOME, due July 24 on Suretone Records (The Cure, Weezer). The exclusive track, filled with a mix of robotic breaks and beats and staccato synth, will be made available soon. This reinterpretation is a direct inverse to the paranoia-filled original found on the band's sophomore EP. The loping bass line and uneasy guitar meshed with a steady drum beat set the dark tone that permeates this four-song collection. Title track, "Another New Home" conjures haunting imagery as frontman Paul Gross bellows over crushing guitars, pounding bass and a wash of feedback. "Nickel Medication" on the other hand is an exercise in restraint: Plodding piano, a myriad of effects and Gross' soft whisper gently pushes the song along to great effect without the use of over-the-top theatrics. Closer "Calm" begins as its name aptly suggests but breaks into a great climax comprised of a cacophony of guitar squall. It ends with wistful keys and the sound of instruments powering down.
