Foo Fighters Poke Fun at Emo

07/30/07
.
(antiMusic) Once a trendsetting himself, Foo Fighers frontman Dave Grohl is taking aim at the "emo" craze which is currently the darling of the major record labels A&R people. Grohl pokes fun at the genre in a song on the group's new album, "Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace". Grohl said long before bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco and Funeral For A Friend were the soundtrack for depressed teenage girls, he witnessed the birth of the "emotional rock" genre back in the 80s.

"I have a funny relationship with emo," Grohl tells MTV.com. "I'm from Washington D.C., and in the mid-'80s, the hardcore scene changed from what it was - Bad Brains and Minor Threat and the Dead Kennedys and MDC - to a bunch of new bands like Rites of Spring and Embrace, (both of) which Ian MACKaye was the singer for. Everyone started labeling it 'emo-core'. I'd never heard anything like it, and it was a really emotional experience. But in D.C., we all hated that 'emo-core' tag."

Grohl pokes fun at the current state of the genre with the song "Cheer Up Boys (Your Make-Up Is Running)" on the new Foo Fighers new CD. He explains, "The title has nothing to do with the song - it's placed right in the middle of the record, where there's a lot of dark stuff. It's a pretty heavy record. We have a couple bummer tunes. I felt the album needed something to sit in the centre and balance it. So we had this lighthearted song, and I called it 'Cheer Up Boys (Your Make-Up Is Running)' because it seemed like a little ray of hope in the middle of all this despair."

That isn't the only surprise for Foo fans on the new CD. - Read MTV's report to learn more.
