(antiMusic) Rev. Al Sharpton led the charge in an 20 city protest against rap lyrics on Tuesday. Dubbed the 'Day of Outrage,' Sharpton's National Action Network organized protest across the U.S. to combat the frequent use of "gutter terms" like 'nigga,' 'bitch' and 'ho' in popular rap music. The name of the event isn't that original (just google it, seems that every other day is a "day of outrage") but an organized protest against the "bitches, hoes and pimp" culture of hip-hop is relatively new. And unlike recently empty "public" PR events like Live Earth that didn't really have a clear goal in mind, Sharpton used these protests as a call to arms to hit the music companies where it hurts by pushing for the "withdrawal of public investments from companies that wont clean up their act,"according to a press release.
Speaking from the protest staged at Motown Museum in Detroit, Sharpton said simply, "I'm here in Motown in Detroit as a symbol of when music was not denigrating and was entertaining." Protests were organized in New York City, Newark, NJ, Los Angeles, CA, Detroit, MI, Atlanta, GA, Miami, FL, Washington, DC, Dallas, TX, Jacksonville, FL, Las Vegas, NV, Kansas City, MO, Phoenix, AZ, Stamford, CT, Philadelphia, PA, Columbia, SC, Houston, TX, Richmond, VA, Baltimore, MD, and Augusta, GA.
