Singer Has Autistic Disorder

(antiMUSIC) The Vines frontman Craig Nicholls
revealed in court on Friday that he suffers from Asperger's Syndrome, a
mild form of autism. Nicholls made the revelation at a hearing for assault
and malicious damage charges stemming from an incident at the Triple M
radio show at the Annandale Hotel where he allegedly damaged a photographers
camera and caused a scene on stage. The court dismissed the
charges against Nicholls.
The Triple M incident lead the Australian
radio station to ban the Vines from their playlist (see
story).
Nicholls was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome
after one of the bands crew members told management of the disorder. Mental
health professions have tried for years to diagnose Nicholls.
Webmd.com
classifies Asperger's syndrome as "a neuropsychiatric disorder. Children
with this disorder experience the inability to understand the feelings
of others, abnormal single-mindedness, lack of verbal skills, insensitivity
to social cues, withdrawal and obsessive indulgence in special interests.
"
DrKoop.com states that "Some researchers
believe that Asperger's sydrome[sic] is simply a mild form of autism."
Amy L. Marr of Worcester Polytechnic Institute,
whose younger brother suffers from the disorder, writes on her website,
"Aspergers is not easily recognizable - in fact, many children are misdiagnosed
with other neurological disorders such as Tourette's Syndrome or Autism.
More frequently, children are misdiagnosed with Attention Deficit (and
Hyperactivity) Disorders (ADD & ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder
(ODD), or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)."
There is no known cure for the disorder
but some of the symptoms can be treated to minimize their impact on a person
with AS.
