Mel Gibson’s plans to call his new film “The
Passion” have been thwarted by a rival studio which owns the rights to
that title. The film which is based on the last days of Jesus will now
be called “The Passion of Christ”.
The film has sparked plenty of controversy
from passionate Jews who are angered with the supposed portrayal of Jews
in the film and their role in the sentencing of Jesus to death.
On the other hand, Catholics seemed to
have embraced the film. According the AP, conservative Roman Catholics
say that the film is a powerful portrayal of the last hours of Jesus’ life.
Miramax owns the rights to the title “Passion”,
forcing Gibson to change the title.
Other controversy surrounding the film
has to do with language. The film is said to incorporate dialog in the
“historically-correct languages of Latin, Hebrew and Aramaic”. For some
off the wall reason, Gibson reportedly did not want to use subtitles but
reality eventually smacked him in head and he now plans to include them.
Good thing for those who don’t speak Latin, Hebrew of Aramaic.
