Tommy Chongs plea to get out of jail fell
on deaf ears as a federal judge ruled that his prison sentence for conspiracy
to sell drug paraphernalia will most likely stand up to appeal court scrutiny
and refused to let the actor out of jail pending the appeal.
The 65-year-old actor was charged with
conspiracy after federal agents raided his business Nice Dreams Enterprises,
Inc and seized thousands of bongs and pipes. The actor was selling the
drug paraphernalia over his website. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy last
spring in federal court and was sentenced to nine months in prison.
He began serving his sentence on October
8th.
He was targeted by the Justice Department
in their crack down on drug paraphernalia. Prosecutors charged that Chong
grew wealthy by promoting drug use in his film and comedy albums. Chong
gained fame with his comedy partner Cheech Marin with a series of films
and comedy albums in the 70s. Chong portrayed a stoned hippy in most of
his films. Prosecutors claim that Chong used his celebrity to help sell
the drug paraphernalia through mail order and his website.
