musicNEWS: Glen Campbell Arrested for DUI, Hit & Run and Assaulting a Police Officer
11-26-03 Keavin

Country singer Glen Campbell was arrested twice on Monday; first for driving under the influence and hit and run and later for assaulting a police officer.

Campbell, best know for his hit "Rhinestone Cowboy" was arrested Monday night in Phoenix after he reportedly  struck another car while driving drunk. He proceeded to leave the scene of the crime but a witness followed him home and called police on a cell phone. The police showed up, arrested Campbell and took him into custody. The intoxicated Campbell reportedly took to singing his hit “Rhinestone Cowboy” while in his jail cell awaiting release.

Police gave Campbell a breathalyzer test and he reportedly had a blood-alcohol level of 0.20. The legal limit in Arizona is 0.08.

ABC news reports that “Police said Campbell had posted bail and was minutes from being released when he became angry and kneed Sgt. Bill Niles in the thigh, demanding to see the police chief.

“Niles was not hurt. But Campbell was taken to jail and appeared in Superior Court just before midnight.

"’There was a lot of, “Do you know who I am? I'm Glen Campbell. ... I shouldn't be locked up like this,'”’ Niles said.”

The 67-year-old singer was released on $2000 bail on Tuesday. According to press reports he was charged with ‘extreme drunken driving, hit and run and suspicion of assaulting a police officer.

Campbell issued a statement on Tuesday apologizing for the events of Monday night.

"Yesterday I was arrested and put in jail. Even at my age, I learned a valuable lesson," Campbell said in a statement read to The Associated Press by a spokesman. "I apologize to my wife, my family, my friends and my fans."

Campbell has an admitted long history of battling heavy drinking and drugs. Last month he told The Associated Press in an interview that he had quit, "I thought I was going to die one night. I woke up the next morning and said, 'I've got to stop doing this. I know better than that.'"

Campbell may have to alter the lyrics to his hit song "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," to “By the time I get to Phoenix I’ll be drinking / I’ll ram my BMW into a Ford / I’ll ask the cops who they think they’re arresting / ‘Cause I’ve never been this drunk before”.
