A joke about smuggling a drug-filled condom
into Sweden is no laughing matter for MTV “Jackass” star Steve-O (Real
name Stephen Glover).
Police raided Glover’s Stockholm hotel
room after the comic told the press that he swallowed a condom filed with
marijuana before entering the country. Police found marijuana and an ecstasy
pill in Glover’s hotel room.
Glover faces possible charges for drug
smuggling and possession. He went before a Swedish court on Saturday (5/25)
and admitted to possessing the drugs but said that the condom swallowing
was just a joke. The court ordered that he be detained until June
6th to give prosecutors a chance to formally file charges.
"I had an ecstasy pill in my bag and I
smoked marijuana in the hotel room. I admit to both of those crimes," Glover
told the court. He added that the comments he made about a drug-filled
condom were not true but were simply a joke. "I apologize that my bad sense
of humor has wasted so much of the Swedish taxpayers' money," he said at
the hearing.
According to a statement issued by Glover’s
publicist, he was denied bail because the court felt he was a flight risk.
Jason Berk , Glover’s U.S. attorney had strong feelings about that decision,
“To suggest that Steve-O is a flight risk is almost humorous. This
is a person whose whereabouts are known by the general public every day
of his life,” Berk said in a statement. “It is unwarranted to place Steve-O’s
career and livelihood in jeopardy by restricting his liberty until his
June 6th hearing. Steve-O has events scheduled, including additional
worldwide appearances on the Don’t Try This At Home tour, and is to begin
filming for a new television show on June 1, 2003. Steve-O has made
clear that he will comply with the procedural requirements of the court
and be present in Sweden to answer to any charges that may be filed against
him. As Steve-O is establishing himself as an internationally acclaimed
performance artist, it is inconceivable that he would jeopardize his career
by becoming a fugitive for failing to attend his court proceedings.”
Glover's Swedish defense counsel Bjoern
Hurtig will appeal the detention order on grounds that it would keep the
entertainer from making a living.
