Blues legend Bo Diddley has publicly come
out against rap music. The 74-year-old took time during a recent performance
at Dunnellon High School in Dunnellon Florida, to tell the audience of
his disdain for hip-hop. He warned the audience that rap is a passing thing
and it is not going to last as long as I have.
"First of all, you can't understand what
it is and it has no meaning," Diddley told the audience last Thursday.
Diddley went after some of the questionable
moral subject matter with popular rap music, especially how women are treated
in rap lyrics. "The lyrics are very disgusting because you are a person,
and a person deserves respect," he said. "I have daughters, my mother was
a woman, and I don't like what I'm hearing."
Diddley told the students that they have
to work hard to make in this world but it can be done legally, without
resorting to the gansta lifestyle promoted by some rap artists. Diddley
encouraged the students to look within themselves to find their own talents
to utilize in the future to make a living. "You've got to hustle, man,"
he said. "There's a legal way to hustle."
It wasnt all talk with Diddley as he introduced
the students to some of him music during the appearance. He even broke
out a rap of his own. "Some folks say old Bo Diddley can't rap. I'm Bo
Diddley and I ain't taking no nap."
