Its 1969 all over again. Or at least it is
in the minds of pop and rock stars as more and more of them jump on the
peace bandwagon. Lenny Kravitz, Green Day and R.E.M. are the latest
crop of recording artists who are using the current war in Iraq as a vehicle
for music.
Lenny Kravitz teamed up with the Rock The
Vote people and recorded a new song called We Want Peace, which is being
distributed on rockthevote.org. Rock the Vote is a center left organization
in America that works to get young people involved in the political process
and traditionally encourages people to support candidates and issues favored
by the Democrat party.
Green Day also took to the web to spread
their new anti-war song, Life During Wartime, which the band is offering
to fans via their official website. The download is accompanied by a statement
from Mike Dirnt where he urges fans, Don't support this crap going on
in the world. Just keep doing what you do and we will talk to you soon"
R.E.M. has joined their anti-war favoring
contemporaries and recorded a new anti-war song of their own. The song
entitled Last Straw appears to be more about blasting U.S. President
Bush and his Iraq policy then peace as the lyrics include lines like,
"Who died and lifted you up to perfection? And what silenced me is written
into law. and " It doesn't hold. Now I don't believe and I never did,
that two wrongs make a right/If the world were filled with the likes of
you, then I'm putting up a fight."
Are you for or against the war in Iraq?
