The Police gave the audience at the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony a special treat on Monday night when
the trio reunited in honor of their induction.
Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers
took the stage together for the first time in 18 years at the decidedly
un-rock n roll black tie affair at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York
City.
Although the set was short, the band treated
those in attendance with three of their biggest hits, "Roxanne," "Every
Breath You Take" and "Message in a Bottle."
It was a lighthearted performance as Andy
Summers joked from the stage, I'd like to make it very clear that there
is absolutely no ego in our band whatsoever."
The self-deprecating humor was targeting
what is believed to be the main reason for the groups demise 18 years agoego.
Fans will be able to watch the performance
courtesy of VH1 when they broadcast highlights from the ceremony on March
16th.
Copeland Sues The Doors.
In related news, Stewart Copeland has filed
suit against The Doors Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger.
Copeland was part of the reunited Doors
that also features The Cults Ian Astbury on vocals but it now appears
that he has been replaced by Los Angeles session drummer Ty Dennis.
Copeland filed suit last Friday in Los
Angeles Superior Court claiming breach of oral contract and is asking the
court to award him damages in excess of $1 million dollars.
Copeland performed with the reunited Doors
at various events last year but was replaced by Dennis for a press related
concert on January 31th in Los Angeles. At the time Copelands absence
was blamed on a elbow injury he suffered from a biking accident last November.
When asked if Copeland would join the new Doors lineup during the up coming
tour, Manzarek said at the time, "If Stewart can do it, fine. If he can't
do it, Ty'll do it."
The band is also facing a lawsuit from
original drummer John Densmore, who sued the two original members seeking
to retain an injunction barring them from using the Doors name. At
press time that suit has not been settled or decided.
