While Americans were celebrating Independence
Day on July 4th, the music world lost a legend
Legendary soul singer, songwriter, and
producer Barry White died Friday (July 4) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
in Los Angeles.
Whites manager Ned Shankman said in a
statement that White was admitted to the hospital last September to undergo
dialysis after experiencing kidney failure.
"Barry continued to fight, getting care
at the finest hospital from the finest medical help available, said Shankman.
White was born on Born September 12, 1944
in Galveston, Texas, but spent most of his life in Los Angeles. During
his three decades in the music business he enjoyed a long string of success
which included 106 gold and 41 platinum albums; and 20 gold and 10 platinum
singles. White became a legend with his romantic and soulful music.
White, who received his first Grammy awards
in 2000 (where he won two awards), was reportedly working on a duet album
with producer/friend Jack Perry, prior to entering the hospital. There
is no word on how far along they were on that project, but the album was
originally slated to be released on Def Soul records.
White is survived by 8 children, grandchildren,
and companion, Catherine Denton.
