Federal law-enforcement officers raided the
offices of rap record label Murder Inc. on Friday looking for evidence
to prove a link between the label and suspected money laundering, drug
dealing, weapons violations, and strong arm tactics, according to law-enforcement
officials.
The label, home to stars like Ashanti and
Ja Rule, has been the focus of a year long federal investigation.
The New York Post reported the following
about the raid:
“Not only are the agencies involved trying
to establish a cash connection between convicted Queens drug lord Kenneth
McGriff and Murder Inc. mogul Irv Gotti, but they are probing to see how
much of the multimillion-dollar music operation is financed with drug money,
sources said.
“Officials in the Brooklyn U.S. attorney's
office believe the players connected to the operation tag along on tours,
even riding on buses that carry the stars and their crews, sources said.
“Investigators suspect that drug profits
are used to purchase equipment, food, transportation and hotel rooms.”
The Post also reports that McGriff is the
focus of an investigation from the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office that
is looking for evidence linking McGriff to “several unsolved shootings
connected to the rap world, including the 1995 Midtown attack on Tupac
Shakur.”
No arrests connected to possible evidence
gathered during the raid had been made at press time.
