Are Viewers Sick of The Osbournes?

When “The Osbournes” debuted last season on
MTV it became the highest rated show in the network’s history and created
a media frenzy over the adventures of the dysfunctional family. The ratings
for the show peaked at 7.7 million viewers last April and started out strong
when the second season of the show debuted in November with 6.63 million
viewers tuning in. Since then the show has lost half of its audience with
only 3.48 million viewers watching the first run of the episode that aired
on Jan 14th (the lowest rating this season).
This doesn’t necessarily mean the end of
the show. Even the lower than average recent ratings for the show are twice
the typical viewership for MTV in primetime which averages 1.2 million
viewers according to New York Daily News. But the show is no longer the
highest rated show on the network, “The Real World,” averaged 3.68 million
viewers per episode.
There is a lot of speculation as to why
people have lost interest in the show. The most popular theory is that
the novelty has worn off. Or perhaps the temperament of this season, which
was filmed after the breakthrough success of the first season, has really
changed with the focus on Sharon’s cancer treatment, the family hamming
it up for publicity and the manufacturing of daughter Kelly into a popstar
hopeful.
The other theory for the decline of “The
Osbournes” is the simple fact that people may just be “f**king” tired of
watching it.
