On Tuesday, John Densmore, the original drummer
of the Doors filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against his
former bandmates, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger.
Densmore charges Mazarek and Kreiger with
breach of contract, trademark infringement and unfair competition.
The lawsuit stems from the reunion tour
for the Doors featuring Mazarek and Kreiger as well as Ian Astbury, vocalist
for The Cult and former Police drummer Stewart Copeland.
"I'm sad and hurt that my former bandmates
are misusing the logo and the name, confusing people," Densmore, told Reuters.
Densmore wants the group to change their
name. "It could be Windows, the Hinges, I don't care what it is," he just
want them to use the name The Doors.
The current incarnation of The Doors are
scheduled to play a concert this Friday at the Universal Amphitheatre in
Los Angeles.
Densmore will not attempt to prevent that
concert from occurring but told Reuters that he has no desire at this time
to reunite with his former bandmates. Reuters also reports that Astbury
and Copeland are named in the lawsuit. Densmore says he loves them as musicians,
"but it's not the Doors. That's my point here ... It shouldn't be called
the Doors if there's someone other than Jim singing, y'know?"
We will have to wait and see if tickets
sales for the tour show that fans agree or disagree with Densmore on that
point.
