When hes not belting out songs with his band
U2, Bono is out trying to save the world. It looks like people are paying
attention to his efforts as his name is on the short list for this years
Nobel Peace Prize.
Bono wont be a shoe in as he has faces
a list of 150 individuals and organizations for the award including Pope
John Paul, UN weapons inspectors Hans Blix and Mohamed Elbaradei,
Illinois Governor George Ryan, and French President Jacques Chirac. No
Saddam is not on this list.
Bono has never been shy about using his
fame to aid efforts he believes in. He has been active in causes that stretch
from trying to bring an end to the conflict in Northern Ireland to the
AIDS epidemic that currently faces Africa and his ultimate quest to help
alleviate poverty in the Third World.
Last year Bono took a 10-day tour of Africa
with US Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill to help give the Bush administration
a better understanding of the poverty and problems that Africa faces.
During his state of the union address President
Bush laid out a plan to help the nations of Africa against their current
AIDS epidemic. Bono has personally meet with President Bush to discuss
U.S. aid in the fight against Third World poverty and AIDS.
The winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize
will be announced in October.
