It looks like the Nay Sayers were wrong and
American Idol has indeed made a wanna-be popstar a star outside of the
television show. That was proved last week when sales were tallied for
the debut album from Kelly Clarkson, the winner of the first season of
the Fox TV program. When the dust settled Clarkson’s debut had first
week sales of 297,000 units in the U.S., landing the album at No. 1 on
the Billboard Album charts.
Slim Shady’s marketing and mogul status
continues to climb as his protégé’ 50 Cent’s captured the
No. 2 spot with “The New Breed” a DVD/CD-single package from the rapper
sold 246,000 copies.
Fleetwood Mac made a triumphant return
debuting at No 3. with “Say You Will,” the first new studio album in fifteen
years to feature Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham (Christine McVie guest
on the album). Many expected the album to sell more than 217,000 copies
in the first week, given the group’s multi-platinum past.
Also debuting in the Top 10 a new album
from Jimmy Buffett entitled “Meet Me In Margaritaville” sold 127,000 copies
landing the album at No. 9. Looking for that lost shaker of salt
continues to pay off for Buffett all these years later.
Linkin Park dropped down to No. 7 with
sales of 192,000. Cher rounded out the Top 10 with “The Very Best of Cher”.
What happened to last week’s No. 1 album
from Godsmack you ask? Saddly the Mass. Rocker’s third effort “Faceless”
took a nosedive right out of the Top 10, landing at No. 13.
Evanescence also dropped out of the Top 10, landing at No. 12. Ironically,
the album sold 23,000 more copies last week than it did the previous week
when it was in the Top 10.
Clarkson’s glory may be short lived as
Madonna looks to land at No. 1 on next weeks chart with her new album,
“American Life”. Judging by early soundscan reports it looks like the “Material
Girl” will easily meet that goal.
