WEA Records plan to release “War Child: Hope
Album” on April 21st. The album will raise funds for the War Child organization
which will use the funds to help the children of Iraq.
Stars have lined up to contribute material
for the album including Avril Lavigne who recorded a cover of the Bob Dylan
classic “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” for the project.
Other artists who are contributing music
to the album include David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Travis, Spiritualized,
Moby, New Order, The Charlatans and George Michael.
Most artists have rerecorded some of their
own music for the 17-track album. McCartney re-recorded a new version of
“Calico Skies” from his 1997 album “Flaming Pie”. David Bowie has re-recorded
“Everyone Says Hi” but the biggest surprise is an appearance from Cat Stevens,
now known as Yasuf Islam, who re-recorded his classic “Peace Train” for
the CD.
"Whatever the politics, whatever the rights
and wrongs of war, children are always the innocent victims so I am delighted
to be able to make this small contribution to a
magnificent project that I hope goes a
long way to alleviating some of the pain and suffering," said McCartney.
War Child was founded in 1993 to aid children
during the civil war in the former Yugoslavi. The organization currently
has personnel on hand at the Iraq-Kuwait border readying their efforts
to aid Iraqi children in the aftermath of the current war taken place in
Iraq.
