Vaux hail from Denver, where the group
originally formed under the name Eiffel back in 1997. After releasing a
few indie EPs, the six piece was picked up by the indie label Undecided,
who offered to record their debut full length. The album Audio Narcotic
was released in 2000, where it received widespread airplay from college
stations across America. They created enough hype to land a spot on the
Vans Warped Tour of 2000 where they were forced to change their name
to Vaux for legal reasons.
Their latest offering from Equal Vision
Records takes listeners through a delightful five track mix of punk, hard
rock and metal. The triple guitar attack adds an extra edge to the sharp,
thrashy and funky riffage of Vaux, fitting their brash garage rock sound
perfectly.
Celibate Good Times introduces us to the
catchy, alcohol fuelled, rocking out of Vaux. Nothing but straight up,
balls-to-the-wall hard rock here. "RAID!" however takes us to the punkier
side the band unveiled "On Life: Living". Vocalist Quentin Smith screams
out a desperate warning, I know theyre coming for you. In "Dearest Darkest"
the band drops down a gear to produces a grooving stoneresque vibe. "Sex
Will Happen Tonight" voices Smiths desperate attempts to get laid, in
a style that echos the funk and fun of Australias Machine Gun Fellatio.
The album ends on the crushing title track,
"Plaque Music". The guitars take on a heavier tone, chugging out triple
strength bursts of madness. The track climaxes a minute from its end in
an exhaustive breakdown.
Plauqe Music amplifies the typical
hard rock lifestyle of sex, drugs and alcohol in an aggressive yet likeable
and catchy fashion. This short EP demonstrates that Vaux know exactly what
theyre doing: showing up half-arsed rock bands like Jet. Rockier, thrashier,
more fun and a hell of a lot more credible than most of the pop rock out
there. If this sounds up your alley, spare a few minutes and check
it out.
