The
Datsuns attempt a Classic Rock Revival
After several listens it’s hard to describe
the Datsun’s “old but new” sound. There is no special effects, no
synthesizers or spacey beep beep ballyhoo. This is straight up Classic
Rock n’ Roll mixed with the sound of today. They incorporate all
sounds of seventies rock, with likes of Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, T
Rex, Deep Purple, and of course Led Zeppelin, which is understandable since
Outa Sight/Outa Mind is produced by John Paul Jones. They
can pack a punch, in the same manner of Queens of the Stone Age, but sound
less “stoner rock” and more “drunken rock.” “Messin’ Around” takes
a Marilyn Manson style riff and puts an Alice Cooper flair too it. “Girls
Best Friend” has the Iggy Pop vibe, but ends up sounding more like Mooney
Susuki. There are even hints of Rage Against the Machine in “Hong
Kong Fury,” same riffs just better solos. “What I’ve Lost” is groovy
summer lament song that makes want to drive along the cost with top down
as your hair is flapping in the wind.
John Paul Jones does produce this, but
I get the feeling that the band came into the studio with this sound and
direction. These songs don’t really sound like cheap rip off’s of
the classics, there is definitely enough original material the carry the
album out from behind the Classic Rock cloud.
Outa Sight/Outa Mind is a valentine
to the afore mentioned artists, which has a legitimate place our musical
realm right now. As Rap-Metal, fades and Emo starts to sound stale,
it’s good to go back in time. At the very least Outa Sight/Outa
Mind can serve as a gateway drug for the previously mentioned bands.
After all the kids need to know Iggy, Alice, and the real Ozzy, before
they can appreciate what’s out today.
