Acid Trip – Lynch the Weirdo
Label: Serjical
Strike Records
Rating:
Lynch the Weirdo by Bad Acid Trip
is one of the few releases from Serj Tankian’s (System of a Down) side
job, Serjical Strike records. The musical comparisons between Bad
Acid Trip and System of a Down can be made immediately when listening to
Lynch the Weirdo.
This album is full of the energetic, yet
repetitive, riffs and quirky vocals with political themes. All of
which are staples of System of a Down.
Lead vocalist Dirk seems to be channeling
the spirit of Hermann Munster in many of the songs, usually in the chorus.
This technique weakens the lyrics, which on paper are good but can sound
ridiculous.
Dirk and the rest of the band, including
Jose, Chris and Keith (no last names needed) are at their best when the
songs begin to thrash. The track “Remember” is loud, fast and short.
The song stands out because it is one of the few songs that wastes absolutely
no time and gets right to the point.
The band’s obvious influences are found
throughout every song. While listening to Weirdo I heard instances
of Slayer, and a breakdown in the track “Strange Humans” that sounded exactly
like the chorus from Anthrax’s “I’m the Man”.
Weirdo lacks the guts to really thrash
and the knowledge to really take a stance, but it is pretty close.
