Day in Rock Report for 04/10/2013
Jon Bon Jovi has denied a tabloid report that Richie Sambora pulled out of Bon Jovi's current tour over a conflict between the singer and the guitarist. Sambora surprised fans when he abruptly announced that he wouldn't be taking part in the band's current tour on the day it was scheduled to kick off. The guitarist had pulled out of an earlier tour in order to seek treatment at a rehab and when he pulled out this time it led to speculation. TMZ reported last week that one of their unnamed "sources" claimed that Sambora dropped off the tour over a contractual dispute between him and frontman Jon Bon Jovi, a claim that Bon Jovi denies in a new interview. "I think Richie's doing all right, (but) I haven't spoken to him," Bon Jovi told Statesman.com. "We were surprised. It was 3:30 on show day on Tuesday and we got a phone call that he wouldn't be there. It's a personal matter. "Don't believe what you read on TMZ because it's the furthest thing from the truth." You can read the full interview here.

The co-founder left the band in 1975 as he became disillusioned with their musical direction, and after his relationship with Glenn Frey began to break down. Now Walsh, who replaced him, has suggested Leadon will return and perform part of the show featuring material from his own era. "Bernie's brilliant I never really got a chance to play with him, but we've been in contact," Walsh tells Billboard. "I'm really glad he's coming. It's going to take the show up a notch. I'm looking forward to playing with him, finally. "There'll be part of the show that doesn't involve me, but I may come out and play some James Gang stuff, just to show what I was doing when Witchy Woman came out. We don't have that down yet." Rdio are also streaming two bonus tracks entitled "Escape Route" and "Native Tongue," which they will continue to feature exclusively following their album stream which ends on April 15th. "We normally don't even write enough songs to have b-sides, but this time around we wrote too many songs for the album," says Hayley Williams of Paramore. "These tracks are both songs we adore, but we felt they deserved to live in their own space compared to the rest of the record. I'm happy everyone will have a deeper look into who we were as people when these songs originated in the beginning stages of the album." rdio.com

(Classic Rock) Black Sabbath will concentrate on their 1970s tracks on their upcoming world tour, bassist Geezer Butler has revealed. And he's recalled the band's early days, when he couldn't afford a bass, their rise to success, and how technology affected their attitude. The metal giants will release new album 13 their first with Ozzy Osbourne since 1978 on June 10, and tour the UK in December. Butler tells The Metal Forge: "Since all our albums date back to the 1970s, that is the decade we will be dealing with. We always have to play the staples, such as Iron Man, Paranoid, Black Sabbath, War Pigs, Children Of The Grave, but it's good to include more obscure stuff." Thinking back to their first studio experiences, he recalls: "The first and second albums were recorded on two four-track machines, the first album in two days, the second in five days. It was basically like doing a live gig in the studio. "As technology advanced, it was almost a curse to have so many tracks to record on; we lost focus of what the band was supposed to be about. It was great for experimenting, but we wasted a lot of time and money just pissing about in the studio on the later albums." more on this story

Mike Portnoy appeared open to the idea that Adrenaline Mob should record a Ronnie James Dio cover album to raise money for the late singer's cancer charity. In a new interview with Classic Rock Revisited, Portnoy was discussing, Omerta, the cover album released by his supergroup (Russell Allen of Symphony X, Disturbed's John Moyer and Mike Orlando) last year, when CRR's Jeb Wright made the suggestion. Here is that portion of the interview: Jeb: You represented Ronnie James Dio in all three of his most famous incarnations. You have Rainbow, Black Sabbath and DIO all on this one. Was that a conscious decision, or did it just happen? Mike: Obviously, Ronnie James Dio is a huge influence of Russell Allen, as well as all of us. We all love Dio. He is one of Russell's heroes. We had already been covering "Stand Up and Shout" and "Mob Rules" in our live set, so those were no brainers to include. We had also been doing "Stargazer" from Rainbow. I had already covered that song in a studio version when I was in Dream Theater and I didn't want to do another one, so we did another track, which was "Kill the King." Jeb: You guys should do a tribute album to DIO from all of his bands and get with Wendy Dio to raise money for his cancer charity. Mike: I know. I think Russell would do it in a heartbeat, no question about it. I think his voice is very much this generations Dio, concerning his power and range. He has that same type of voice that Ronnie had. Now, the guitarist tells Billboard that he's already begun work on a new project."I'll say, loosely, I've started a blues album," says Walsh of the record that mixes originals with "real obscure R&B and blues songs. Half of it is original, and half of it's old Howlin' Wolf or John Lee Hooker. "I told everybody to bring a song in and everybody did, be it an old blues song or some idea. We went through some old Stax records from, like, the Otis Redding days, Sam & Dave stuff that were just albums tracks, and did our version of a whole bunch of stuff." Walsh has teamed up with Dr. John, Robert Randolph, Keb' Mo', drummer Jim Keltner, keyboardist Mike Finnigan and Jeff Beck bassist Tal Wilkenfeld for the sessions. more on this story

(Classic Rock) Former Anthrax guitarist Dan Spitz says his home life is hell because it's a daily struggle to be the parent of autistic twins. That's the inspiration behind his new band, Red Lamb, and their self-titled 2012 album, which he co-wrote with Megadeth's Dave Mustaine. And while only one track, Puzzle Box, is directly about autism, the whole record is about the challenges the condition presents on a daily basis. Spitz who's midway through a US tour entitled Anarchy For Autism tells Metal Assault: "You feel my pain in all the other songs because it transcended into whatever the topic may be that Dave and I wrote about. It's all a piece of me. The place I was in when I wrote this album is not a good place to be. "My daily life is hell. We're locked in our house most of the time as prisoners. There are chains on our doors. When our kids get outside they don't know their name they cannot transition simply from inside the house to getting in the car. more on this story

(hennemusic) On the day he announced his summer tour, Kid Rock stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform one of his many hits, "All Summer Long."Rock's summer tour, with guests Kool & The Gang, ZZ Top and Uncle Kracker, made news for its $20 ticket price, as the singer tries to keep things fan-friendly for all. "Everyone knows the economy is still hurting people across the country, but I didn't want that to be a reason why everyone couldn't get out and enjoy themselves on a summer night," explains Rock. "So we're going to throw the biggest and best party ever, with prices across the board that are reasonable and transparent. No hidden fees, no gimmicks. We're not sparing any expense on this tour, we're going over the top as always, but that doesn't mean we're going to ask the fans to pay more. If this works we're going to play to packed houses of fans who appreciate what we're doing. If it doesn't, might be a long summer. But someone has to go out there and fight these high prices and change things up, and I'm lucky enough that I can afford to take a pay cut. $20. Best night ever." Check out the performance here.
