Green Day Fans Hijack Poll
(Rock News Desk) Green Day have been voted the best punk band of all time, ahead of genre stalwarts like the Clash, the Ramones and the Sex Pistols.

But Rolling Stone, who ran the poll, admit the result was almost certainly skewed because the US three-piece's official website and leading fan club site both asked people to vote for the act.

The magazine admits: "Even the members of Green Day would probably object to being ranked higher than the Ramones and the Clash on this list – but the Internet has spoken and we have to honor that." more on this story

Kings Of Leon Meltdown May Come At Royal Cost
(Rock News Desk) Insurance firm Lloyds, who backed Kings of Leon's cancelled US tour, could be made to pay out up to $15m in lost revenues for venues and promoters – and that could affect the band's chances of playing big shows in the future.

Lloyds of London are one of several companies which secure the investment of all those involved in putting on large-scale shows. When the Kings called off their trek after frontman Caleb Followill's onstage breakdown at the beginning of August, the claim forms started arriving.

"It's kind of like a credit report – you have to earn your reputation over time. Insurance companies are going to be looking at that," Elizabeth Wightman of Steelbridge Insurance tells Rolling Stone. "There's a lot of rating factors: venue size, age of the performer, health of the performer, how far they have to travel, whether it's plain, train or automobile." more on this story

New Album From Deep Purple's Roger Glover
(Kayos) Eagle Rock have set an September 6th release date for Roger Glover and the Guilty Party's "If Life Was Easy" album.

That's right. An all-new studio album from Deep Purple's Roger Glover. It's been a long time coming but Glover's finally followed-up his 2002 Snapshot album. If Life Was Easy is truly a milestone in the legendary bassist's career.

Recorded as much on the tour bus and in hotel rooms (after performing around the world for thousands at a pop) as in proper recording studios, the effort rocks with the proper combination of sincerity and strength. From blues to psychedelica, from hard to streamlined and beyond, the music rocks. Glover, with the help of Nazareth's Dan McCafferty and Pete Agnew as well as Mickey Lee Soule of Elf and Rainbow, has fashioned an album no self-respecting Deep Purple fan can afford to miss.

The album won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance and became one of the most significant records of the nineties and of U2's career.

Mike Portnoy Says New Group is Not A Solo Project
(Rock News Desk) Mike Portnoy says he has no interest in being defacto frontman of his new band Adrenaline Mob – and he didn't want the role in former outfit Dream Theater either.

The drummer stunned fans by quitting the prog metal outfit he'd former last year. In the aftermath singer James LaBrie suggested their new lineup, featuring sticksman Mike Mangini, was more balanced "without anybody in the background trying to grab the limelight when maybe they should just be grooving." But Portnoy rejects the idea he fought with LaBrie for top billing, and insists he's equally happy working behind Symphony X frontman Russell Allan in Adrenaline Mob.

The drummer tells Noisecreep: "I absolutely am not the defacto frontman in the Mob. That title surely goes to Russell, who's one of the best frontmen in the business. I'm just happy to be part of the band, and not necessarily leading it." more on this story

The Darkness Look To AC/DC, Queen, Aerosmith For Inspiration
(Gibson) Hot off their face-melting reunion at this year's Download Festival, The Darkness are back in the studio. The Lowestoft-based group are looking to pick up where they left off in 2006, when they broke up on the heels of their second album, One Way Ticket to Hell… and Back. Now, the boys who belted "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" are putting the finishing touches on their third album, a disc singer Justin Hawkins links to some of rock's heaviest hitters.

Hawkins told Total Guitar, "Home is where the heart is. When you write songs, you need a grounding to set the stories in. There's a lot about small-town life. The album has songs about stuff that's happened to us in the town. It's AC/DC, Queen, Aerosmith, etcetera."

Regarding the group's most noticeable influence, Queen, Hawkins said that the band put a lot of thought into just how much of Freddie Mercury and company they can wear on their proverbial sleeves. "We could do all those big Queen arrangements," he pondered. "It's just whether we want to. Do you overblow it? Do you underblow it?" more on this story

Paul McCartney Phone Hack Scandal Victim?
(Gibson) Former Beatle Paul McCartney is the victim of a phone-hacking scandal in England. The attack comes after his ex-wife, Heather Mills, claimed a journalist with the Mirror Group confessed to hacking into voicemail messages left by then-boyfriend Sir Paul in 2001.

McCartney told the BBC the phone hacking was a "horrendous violation of privacy."

"When I go back [to Britain] after this tour, I am going to talk to the police because apparently I have been hacked," McCartney said. "I don't know much about it because they won't tell anyone except the person themselves. So I will be talking to them about that. I do think it's horrendous violation of privacy. I do think it has been going on for a long time and I do think more people than we know knew about it…" more on this story

When John Lennon Met Paul McCartney
(Gibson) When Rod Davis joined The Quarrymen as a skiffle-crazed banjo player in 1957, he had no idea the group would evolve into the biggest band in rock and roll history, The Beatles. Speaking to BBC News on the occasion of the anniversary of the group's first date at the legendary Cavern Club, Davis recalled leaving the group for a holiday in France that summer and returning to find his seat had been filled by a younger kid named Paul McCartney.

"The famous meeting with Lennon and McCartney was 6 July and, a couple of weeks after that, I remember practicing at [John's] Aunt Mimi's [house] and it was the only time I ever remember being there," he recalled. "I turned up at Mimi's and there was this guy there, who I didn't know. So I said to John, 'Who's this, John?' And he said, 'That's Paul; he's come to listen to us practice.' By then obviously they'd offered him the banjo player slot; so if I hadn't been such a rubbish banjo player, Paul McCartney wouldn't have got in the group."

Davis disputed the date assigned by Beatles historians for The Quarrymen's first show at the Cavern Club, long reported to have been August 7, 1957. "No question about it, I played three or four times at The Cavern and it was definitely before August," he said. "I have my dad's passport which says, 'Entry to Boulogne 29 July, 1957,' so I was definitely not [at the Cavern in August]." more on this story

Guns N' Art for Matt Sorum
(Sub) Guns 'N Roses/The Cult/Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum has unveiled five original art pieces. Here is the official word:

The first five pieces in the "Art Of Drums" collection marks nothing less than the creation of a new visual medium: not oil, not acrylic, but a drummer's rhythm bottled up through a manipulation of time and light and translated onto canvas as visual art.

Created in collaboration with SceneFour, the Los Angeles-based creativity house behind artistic ventures with the RZA, Bootsy Collins and many other luminaries, Sorum's pieces are the first from what will over the coming months become a series of iconic drummers joining the visual art realm through the harnessing of this groundbreaking approach. more on this story

Korn's Jonathan Davis Explains Painful Lyrics
(Rock News Desk) Jonathan Davis says Korn's lyrics are mainly about pain and torment because he's writing about what he knows.

The frontman explains: "I've always written about what I've been dealing with. It might be because of my background growing up, being called 'freak' by kids in Bakersfield, that those themes are natural to me."

He says his own proudest achievement with the band is their Untouchables album and he's looking forward to releasing their latest project, a dubstep LP made in collaboration with Skrillex and other DJs: "It's come out to be some very interesting stuff." more rock news

Adrenaline Mob Singled Out Week: Psychosane
Adrenaline Mob (Symphony X's Russell Allen, Sonic Stomp's Mike Orlando, Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy Fozzy's Rich Ward and Nena's Paul DiLeo) are releasing their self-titled debut EP this week. To celebrate we asked Mike to tell us about some of the songs. Today he tells us about "Psychosane":

Psychosane started off as a song I tracked many years actually prior to teaming up with Russ & forming Adrenaline Mob. Our usual method of me bringing the recorded tracks over to Russells Chanty Shack & gettin to work on Lyrics & melodies with Russ was again the norm here.. Though on a break I added the release of the song where MP sings over & the section before the solo as a direct inspiration from Portnoys incredible playing style & saying to myself, this will be perfect for Mike & myself to really lean into this section & sync up together. After the basic song was arranged Russ & I started hitting lyrics & melodies. The title was already there & was something I had from way back when.. It was inspired by the movie American Psycho actually where the main character seemed at times so sane & in control but then would just cut someone to pieces. Russ & I then turned it more to the musical factor of it cutting you to the core with the power of the song.

The track has a real cool overall bounce & hop to it which is something I love to convey in songs. The verse has got a cool Pantera vibe where Russ hit these insane powerful notes that rip through your brain.

The pre chorus was something Mike P. always said he heard there..big 3 part harmonies ala Alice in Chains vibe which I feel jumps out of the track in a great way & sets up the slammin groove of the chorus. The energy of solo I felt had to match the songs so I went for it in true Adrenaline style & ending with a real cool Talkbox, which live Russ & I do together! Psychosane just really encompasses many aspects of Adrenaline Mob & is one of my favorite tracks!

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the EP right here!
