Gotthard Singer Killed
Gotthard frontman Steve Lee was killed in a traffic accident near Las Vegas on Tuesday. The band issued the following: Steve was killed accidentally during a motorcycle trip in the USA on Interstate 15 between Mesquite and Las Vegas and died at the scene.

The Gotthard singer had flown to the U.S. with some biker friends just this weekend to fulfill a long-cherished dream for which he'd never had the time, due to his heavy touring schedule for many years. It was to be two weeks through the states on a Harley Davidson.

The 21 Swiss bikers started their journey on Sunday on a total of 12 motorcycles. On Tuesday 5 October, about 50 miles from Las Vegas, the group had stopped at the roadside to put on their rain gear as it had started to rain. On the slippery road, the trailer of a passing truck began to skid. The driver attempted evasive action but his trailer clipped five of the motorcycles parked at the roadside; one of them hit Steve Lee. - more on this story

Get Intimate With Metallica This Thanksgiving
Warner Bros is inviting fans to get intimate with Metallica this Thanksgiving. Read on for the official details: On June 12th, 2008, on the eve of their headlining performance at the Bonnaroo Music Fesival, multi-platinum rock band Metallica played an intimate, surprise performance at The Basement, an 150-capacity venue below Nashville record store Grimey's New & Preloved Music. In attendance were ecstatic Metclub fan club members, Grimey's staffers, a few lucky friends, and members of local law enforcement agencies!

Now the explosive energy of that hot and sweaty, packed-to-the-rafters show has been captured on the recording Live at Grimey's, which will be released by Warner Bros. Records on the day after Thanksgiving, November 26th (known in retail circles as "Black Friday").

Live at Grimey's, which includes such highlights as "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," a blistering "Master of Puppets," and "For Whom the Bell Tolls," will be released on standard CD plus as a limited-edition two-disc set on regular-weight 10" vinyl with a gatefold jacket.

Dream Theater Feud Erupts Online
(Rock Radio) The tense calm covering the split between departed Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and the rest of the band went to the brink of being shattered yesterday after he and singer James LaBrie came close to falling out in public.

When a Portnoy fan noticed mentions of LaBrie's solo tour were being removed from the drummer's website, Portnoy confirmed he was acting after his ex-colleague had made "completely disrespectful" comments.

Portnoy begin removing publicity for LaBrie's tour. When asked about the deletions by a fan he replied: "I'm afraid your eyes are not playing tricks on you. I was willing to ignore that the guy insisted all the stuff relating to me be removed from DreamTheater.net. But then, reading the headline with James insensitively claiming they're not sad about by departure, I cannot in happy standing promote his solo tour." - Find out what happened next

Keith Emerson of Emerson Lake And Palmer Undergoes Major Surgery
(hennemusic) Emerson Lake And Palmer's keyboard master Keith Emerson has opened up to fans via Facebook about some recent surgery he underwent. Make that surgeries. Plural.

"This all started during a routine medical that incorporated an endoscopy, MRI, blood tests - all of which turned out OK," writes Keith. "Finally, my doctor looked up my past medical records. 'I see it's been over five years since your last colonoscopy. To be safe it is time for another.' That test caused concern with the reveal of a dangerous polyp situated in my large colon. It was decided that I should have it removed for analysis immediately. This involved laparoscopic surgery and a two-inch incision in my stomach to remove about two inches of the colon it was attached to."

"However, surgery showed up more than anyone had bargained for. A large section of my lower colon was afflicted with a diverticular disease with significant number of diverticula and it all had to come out - nearly a foot and a half of it!" - more

Glee Cast Breaks Beatles Record
The greatest band in music history has been topped by auto-tuned TV Gleeks. Gibson has the tale: With the unveiling of this week's Billboard Hot 100, the cast of Glee will be the group with the most entries on the chart in its 52-year history. With 71 singles in the Hot 100, The Beatles were the former record-holders.

But, with six new charted entries (five Britney Spears covers and a version of Paramore's "The Only Exception"), the Glee cast have upped their total to 75 Hot 100 appearances. The Beatles scored their entries between 1964 and 1996 (with the release of "Real Love" from Anthology 2), whereas the folks from Glee have achieved their sum in an impressive one year, four months and two weeks, according to Billboard.com.

Of course, The Beatles actually contributed to the Glee cast's success. Their cover of "Hello Goodbye" is one of their entries – and they'll likely have another next week, with their take on "I Want to Hold Your Hand." But Glee isn't even close to catching The Beatles' tally of 34 Top 10 entries in the Hot 100. The cast of the Fox television can only claim one of those (with the #4 cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'"). - more on this story

Original Alice Cooper Band Members Reunite For New Nightmare
Alice Cooper is working with producer Bob Ezrin on "Welcome II My Nightmare," the sequel to his classic album.

Cooper recently spoke with Billboard and we learn some interesting things about the project including the fact that Alice has recorded three new songs with his original band mates Dennis Dunaway (bass), Neal Smith (drums) and Michael Bruce (guitar).

Alice also tells Billboard about how he and Ezrin came to the decision to revisit Nightmare: "We thought the story was good, but we started talking about 'Welcome to My Nightmare,' which I think is our biggest triumph," Cooper says. "He mentioned, 'What if Alice had another nightmare?' And we wrote three songs right there. He got really involved in it. Bob is even darker than I am."

Phil Collins Retiring From Music
We told you a little bit about this in yesterday's digest but Gibson has some details today: Genesis frontman Phil Collins says that his R&B covers album, Going Back, will be his last album. His next project? A book about his large collection of Alamo and Texas Revolution artifacts, according to Billboard.com.

"It's a huge collection of memorabilia from the Alamo and before and after it, basically the Texas Revolution in general," said Collins, who was first inspired by Texas history as a child after watching the Walk Disney film, Davy Crockett. "It's basically the history of all the things I've collected and putting them in the context of the revolution. It's in progress and it's entertaining."

The book's deadline is mid-2011, and Collins plans for it to be out in 2012. It will feature his collection of weapons, clothing, armaments and documents, including one signed by Alamo survivor and former San Antonio mayor John W. Smith. - more on this story

Jagged Little Alanis Morissette Anniversary
On this date in 1995, Alanis Morissette went to No 1 on the U.S. album chart with Jagged Little Pill. The album went on to become one of the biggest-selling albums ever by a female artist with worldwide sales over 33 million. Gibson takes a look back.

The road to superstardom began with the singer's move from Ottawa to Toronto, following her high school graduation in 1993. After a visit to Nashville proved fruitless, she began visiting Los Angeles, where she met musician Glen Ballard. They formed an instant musical bond and quickly began writing and recording songs in Ballard's studio. Some songs that would end up on Morissette's Jagged Little Pill album, such as "Perfect," were written and recorded in less than 20 minutes.

During one of her stays in L.A., Alanis was mugged at gunpoint. Because of the experience, she began having daily panic attacks. Ballard encouraged her to deal with her angry and upset feelings through her songs. Morissette later said that her collaborator was the first person who had encouraged her to put herself in her music. Anyone who heard "You Oughta Know" could certainly hear that the singer had put every ounce of herself into the anger of that song. - more on this story

Singled Out: Arthur Nasson's Unglued
Today Arthur Nasson tells us about "Unglued" from his brand new album "Echo Garden," which was released this week. We now turn it over to for the story:

Oh, "Unglued." What a fun time I had recording this one. In dealing with the disappointment, that comes with the complete madness of most humans, many people lose all coping skills and regress steeply, becoming disillusioned, embittered and withdrawn.

"Unglued" is about flying in the face of this and not only finding the joy in life in spite of, but embracing the childish fun of flipping people off along the way. The narrator [that's me] suggests in a very, "NO, REALLY, YOU SHOULD BE LOCKED UP, HERE'S BUS FARE TO MCCLEAN HOSPITAL" sort of way. That the real problem here is neither a lack of communication or difference in perception, what is at issue is that the interaction has soured due to one party being completely F#$%$@ing insane.

Set to an early sixties kind of Beatle-esque jangle of Telecasters through Vox Amps, walking bass and my young son [12 at the time of the session] playing drums with the swagger and swing, most drummers couldn't manage from a noose.

We travel along adding a few production nods along the way, like the double tracked the lead vocals where I got to pour down the lyrics like cold glasses of beer. Moving on to add a series of vocal harmonies that stay together as they travel in differing directions, while doing tambourine and percussion at the same time. Adding a guitar solo soaked in echo that follows the vocal line.

Well, I am clearly determined to have fun, jump in if you like.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album - right here!

Gene Simmons Claims KISS Is The Best Known Band On Earth
(Gibson) Gene Simmons claims that the reach of KISS is so large that almost everyone on the planet knows who they are.

"By many estimates, we are the four most recognized faces on earth," he told Scotland's Daily Record. "Do you know what the king of Sweden looks like? No. That's funny, because everyone in Sweden knows what KISS look like."

Because of the massive appeal of KISS, he says that including the band's music in the new installment of the Guitar Hero video game series (for which Simmons also did voice work) isn't much of a boon to them. "It's good for other bands," he said. "These kids know KISS already. They know who we are, they know the music."

What Inspired Aerosmith's Walk This Way?
(Gibson) In a new interview with Total Guitar magazine, Aerosmith guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford discuss some of their most famous riffs. Perry explains that his love of funk played a big role in making "Walk This Way."

"That one I kind of planned around the fact that I was always interested in funk, from the really laid back funk of The Meters to the high energy funk of James Brown and everything in between, whether it's Sly or the Funkadelics or whatever, and I was always interested in incorporating it into rock," Perry said. "I can remember thinking, 'Rather than cover someone else's, why don't I write my own?' So whether that came out showing the colors that I intended it to – I don't know if it's true-blue funk or what – but in my head that's how it came out that day."

Whitford remembers the "Walk This Way" riff coming about almost magically. "That's a riff that just fell out of the sky – all of a sudden there's Joe playing this riff and it was just, 'We've got to finish this! We've got to figure out something!,'" Whitford said. "I think Steven [Tyler] lost his first set of lyrics, he left them in a taxi or something, and he came up with a whole new idea for the lyrics and that was that." - more on this story

John Lennon Film To Air on PBS and Central Park
(Gibson) A new film, LENNONNYC, will be shown Saturday in New York's Central Park to celebrate what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday. According to Spinner.com, the movie will then be shown on November 22 on PBS, as part of the American Masters series.

The movie, which depicts Lennon's time in New York City, was produced and directed by Michael Epstein. "I had always thought of John as a New Yorker," he said. "He kind of embodied for me New York. I felt that with his 70th birthday coming up that New York was the right lens to use to look at his life, to look at his solo life. I didn't want to go back and unpack The Beatles again because it had been done a billion times and I don't think there's anything fresh to mine in there."

LENNONNYC features footage of Lennon in the '70s and focuses on his solo career, political activism, relationship with Yoko Ono, "Lost Weekend" phase and time raising son Sean. It also features interviews with producer Jack Douglas, Elton John and photographer Bob Gruen, who shot the famous photo of Lennon in his New York City shirt. - more on this story
