AC/DC Nab Top Performance Honor
(hennemusic) Earlier this month, AC/DC took home the "Top Boxscore Award" at the 2010 Billboard Touring Awards ceremony in New York, honoring the band's three sellout shows at Sydney's ANZ Stadium.

AC/DC's performance at Donington's Download Festival was the comfortable winner in the category; having brought their own stage set-up with them and not played at a UK festival since the early Eighties, it was always going to be difficult to beat the rock gods. - more on this story

Metallica Admits Going Too Far
(Rock AAA) Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich says the band have accepted the "slaps on the wrist" they received from the rock and metal community over the years.

He understands people think the thrash giants lost their way, especially in their troubled period around the late 90s. But they still enjoy making music – and importantly, they still do it for themselves.

"It got out of control in the 90s. We were putting an album out every half an hour or something. We've certainly got our wrists slapped a couple of times by the community when we've gone too far." Lars tells FasterLouder. "I'm not going to give you the crap about doing it for the fans – we do it for ourselves. But the best thing about music is when it's a shared experience. So that's why we've tried to give the fans so much access. - more on this story

Unreleased Syd Barrett Jam Gets Release
(Gibson) The late, legendary Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett remains one of the most enigmatic figures in rock music, and a new anthology of his work, An Introduction to Syd Barrett, is only likely to further the myths and mysteries surrounding the iconoclastic artist, who died in 2006.

Of particular interest to Barrett fans will be the anthology's inclusion of a never-before released track, "Rhamadan," which is available as a bonus download to those who purchase the album.

The track is drawn from the tumultuous sessions for Barrett's 1970 solo album, The Madcap Laughs, and is a prime example of Barrett's most noncommercial instincts. "Rhamadan" is essentially a 20-minute, freeform jam, with Barrett forsaking melody and structure as he solos on a variety of instruments. - more on this story

Anniversary of Freddie Mercury's Death
(Gibson) Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of British rock band Queen, died on November 24, 1991 at his home in Kensington, London. He was only 45 years old. His publicist announced that Mercury had died of bronchopneumonia resulting from AIDS.

Mercury had looked terribly ill for some time over the past two or three years and there had been a glut rumors circulating as to his health. The day before his death, however, Freddie released this statement: "Following enormous conjecture in the press, I wish to confirm that I have been tested HIV positive and have AIDS. I felt it correct to keep this information private in order to protect the privacy of those around me. However, the time has now come for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth, and I hope everyone will join me, my doctors and all those worldwide in the fight against this terrible disease."

Mercury, according to longtime companion and confidante, Mary Austin, decided to take his own life by ending his medication: "It was Freddie's decision to finally end it all. He chose the time to die," Mary told OK magazine in 2000. "He knew it was coming. The quality of his life had changed so dramatically and he was in more pain every day. He was losing his sight. His body became weaker as he suffered mild fits. It was so distressing to see him deteriorating in this way. One day he decided enough was enough and stopped all the medical supplements that were keeping him going. The overwhelming thing for me was that he was just so incredibly brave. He looked death in the face and said, 'Fine, I'll accept it now – I'll go.' But it was peaceful and he died with a smile on his face." - more on this story

Velvet Revolver Facing Challenge
(hennemusic) In a new interview with Artisan News Service, Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan talks about the challenge of finding a new frontman who will measure up.

"It's gotta be better than it was; it's gotta be as good, at least," says Duff. "And for us, it's gotta be better. And Scott is an amazing vocalist and frontman, so it's gotta be as good or better than that. We can't [step down a notch]."

"It's one of those things, if you concern yourself with it [too much, it starts to work against you] because there's a not a lot to pool from out there — for our particular band. There's some great talent — we've heard some really, really good guys — but to get all of us to agree on what that… I don't know if the guy that all four of us want is ever gonna exist, but we've gotta get close." - more on this story

Axl Rose Vs Guitar Hero Over Slash?
(Rock AAA) Guns N' Roses mainman Axl Rose has filed a $20m lawsuit against the makers of Guitar Hero because Slash appeared in the 2007 version of the game.

Guitar Hero III included the GnR track Welcome to the Jungle, but Rose says he only gave permission for its appearance as long as Slash and his new band Velvet Revolver weren't featured.

The singer is furious that manufacturer Activision broke the deal, and especially because the guitarist appears on the game's cover. Rose's legal papers say: "Activision span a web of lies to conceal its true intentions to not only feature Slash and VR prominently in GH III, but also promote the game by emphasizing an association between Slash and Guns N' Roses, and the band's song Welcome to the Jungle." - more on this story

Roger Daltrey Slams Simon Cowell
The Who frontman Roger Daltrey is the latest star to have a go at the X Factor / American Idol mastermind Simon Cowell.

The veteran rocker believes the music industry is in crisis - and he blames Simon, according to an article in the Sun newspaper. Roger said: "We really need to break away from The X Factor and American Idol - that Simon Cowell thing....I really think the music industry will beat this slump and come back stronger.

"Groups like The Who, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles wouldn't have made it past the audition stage, let alone be shown on TV. That's the joke of it. The music they make on the shows is absolute tripe. He's made a good industry out of it, but it's belittled the power of music. Out-of-print in North America since 2005, TMR says the utmost care was taken in presenting these records in the best way possible:

"We started by mastering each LP from the original analog master tapes, the first time this process had been used for any of these titles. While extremely labor-intensive, this method ensured that the material was never converted into a digital signal. The result is an audio quality that stiffens the hairs on the back of your neck." - more on this story

Kelly Shaefer's Velvet Revolver Experience
Our very own Mark Hensch caught up with Kelly Shaefer to discuss the first Atheist album in 17 years but they also discussed how Kelly's fans viewed him auditioning for Velvet Revolver. Here is that part of the exchange:

antiMusic: You also tried out for the lead singer position in Velvet Revolver. Did you ever worry that metalheads would accuse you of "selling out?" Why or why not?

Kelly: Initially I sent the Neurotica record to Slash (Velvet Revolver's guitarist) and he called me three days later and said he and Duff McKagan (the group's bassist) liked what they heard from my voice so they sent me three tunes to write for. I did just that and they called me back and brought me to Los Angeles to write and rehearse. They had been looking through 650 singers before getting to me. I hit it off well with Slash and we wrote some cool music together, but in the end Scott Weiland got the gig. It was amazing being able to cross to the other side and jam with what is really The Rolling Stones of our generation. I've got nothing but great things to say about all those guys.

What about me "selling out," you ask? I don't worry about that. No one is going to tell me that if Slash calls them and asks them to sing on a tune, or if Brian Johnson from AC/DC asks you to sing some tunes he wrote, that they are not going to sing. I have no regrets – for a death metal guy from Sarasota, Florida, it was a crazy experience for me and I loved it. I love trying to fit myself around situations outside my comfort zone. I highly recommend it to broaden your horizons musically. - Check out Mark's full interview with Kelly here!

Nine Inch Nails and Filter's Liesegang Teams With Chris Holmes for Ashtar Command
Ashtar Command, formed by DJ/producer Chris Holmes and former Nine Inch Nails member and Filter founder Brian Liesegang have released "Gravity," the debut video from their forthcoming album American Sunshine Vol. 1.

On American Sunshine Vol. 1, Holmes and Liesegang are joined by an array of like-minded performers including Berg, Alex Ebert (Edward Sharp & The Magnetic Zeros), Joshua Radin, Har Mar Superstar and Rachel Yamagata on vocals, guitarists Stephen Fitzpatrick [Veruca Salt] and Johnny Radtke [Kill Hannah], drummers Matt Walker [Filter, Smashing Pumpkins] and Joey Waronker [Beck, R.E.M.], Solomon Walker [Morrissey] on bass, Mike Garson [David Bowie] on piano, Oliver Kraus [Beth Orton] on cello, and Stewart Cole [Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros] on horns.

"Gravity" is inspired by interviews Holmes conducted with members of the Heaven's Gate cult in 1994 before their mass suicide in 1997 , and features Z Berg, lead singer of The Like, on vocals. The video disseminates the message that if you want to reach the kingdom level above human, you have to leave everything you know behind - and only then can you become an ascendant master. The video is the first in a series of short films that will coincide with the release of the LP over the next year. - Check out the video here

Anniversary of INXS' Michael Hutchence Death
(Gibson) On November 22nd in 1997, INXS singer Michael Hutchence was found dead in his hotel suite in Sydney. He was 37. Hutchence's body was found at 11: 50 a.m. naked behind the door to his room. He had apparently hanged himself with his own belt and the buckle broke away and his body was found kneeling on the floor and facing the door. Gibson takes a look back:

Being a performer was always in Michael Hutchence's blood. Born Michael Kelland John Hutchence on January 22, 1960 in Sydney, Australia, the Hutchence family moved to Hong Kong when Michael was four. His first real taste of performing happened when he appeared in a local toy store commercial when he was eight. The Hutchence family moved back to Sydney when Michael was in his late teens, and he soon befriended Andrew Farriss at Davidson High School, who convinced him to join his band, Doctor Dolphin.

In 1977, Andrew's older brother, Tim, invited Andrew, Hutchence and Doctor Dolphin's bass player, Garry Beers, to join him and his schoolmate, Kirk Pengilly, in a new band. With the addition of Andrew and Tim's younger brother, John, they formed the Farriss Brothers, with Andrew on keyboards, Jon on drums, Tim on lead guitar, Geoff Kennelly on drums, Pengilly on guitar and sax, and Hutchence on lead vocals. The Farris Brothers made their debut in August of 1977 at Whale Beach, just north of Sydney. - more on this story
