Day in Rock Report for 02/03/2010
(Rock Radio) The long-standing rumors about Steven Tyler having tried out for Led Zeppelin are true, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has told Classic Rock Magazine. And the singer even tried to keep the news from his bandmates, which, says Perry, demonstrates how difficult it's been to work with him in recent times. Tyler was one of those shortlisted to replace Robert Plant when he decided not to pursue a Led Zep reunion after their one-off London show in 2007. But Perry later spoke to Zep's Jimmy Page about it, and discovered the audition had been "awkward".... Tyler turned up without knowing enough about Led Zep's set or gameplan, and was under the impression he'd be joining the band to write new material - which wasn't currently under discussion.

(Rock Radio) Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 says he understands how the band's fans may be confused over the three members working on their side-project when they're supposed to be concentrating on their reunion album.Singer and bassist Hoppus, guitarist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker got back together this time last year and announced plans to work on a new release. But DeLonge recently said he didn't think it would be ready this year, and continued working on his other band Angels & Airwaves. Meanwhile Hoppus has been continuing production work with other bands and Barker is involved in a number of musical ventures. Hoppus tells MTV: "I know it's confusing. Everyone's like, 'Tom's doing this, Travis is doing this, Mark's producing... Why aren't you guys focusing on Blink?' "What people need to understand is: that's how we focus on Blink. We go off and we bring all these different ideas back. We get inspired by other artists and by working with other people, then we come back to Blink. It helps."

Morley has a great new interview with Dilana, the woman that many felt should have been the winner of Rock Star Supernova. And perhaps had she been picked, the supergroup would have had a much different fate. We'll never know but we do have a small except from the interview where Dilana explains why it took three years to release her brand new album, Inside Out. Here you go! "Basically the first problem that occurred was bad management obviously. I, immediately after the show, started writing, co-writing with other artists, so I basically had the record ready June of 2007 which was exactly a year after the show," she said. "I signed a really bad contract with an independent label in the UK who went bankrupt five shows into a six-week tour. And basically left me stranded in London with my entire band and no way to get back to the US. So that was the first you know, big let down. And then I had another guy who basically was a fan of mine and won the lottery on the East Coast. So he bought the record from the label in the UK that went bankrupt. " [antiMusic.com's Morley Seaver: Huh, wow.] "And yeah, that was my reaction. I was like 'Oh my god. This is so great because this guy is such a fan and you know, he's going to work with me on this.' But the thing is he had never been in the music industry. So he started up the label and this all happened in January of last year---I can't believe it. It's a year ago, oh my God. So about four months later we were still going back and forth between our lawyers trying to figure out the contracts and I just couldn't get to a place of comfort and feeling that 'this isn't going to happen to me again.' And I was dealing with a guy who suddenly puts together a label with people who know nothing. And it was kind of a weird thing but we both at the same time decided that this is not going to work. I never signed a deal with him and he still owns the record. And the label has released it. So basically my hands are tied. I have no control over the record." But there is even more to this story, read the rest along with the full

Fresh out of the studio with their new album, Travellers in Space and Time, The Apples in stereo are proud to announce upcoming tour dates in support of the album's release on April 20 via Yep Roc / Simian / Elephant 6.Continuing the tradition of curating support acts on their tours, The Apples in stereo will be joined on the road by The Generationals and Laminated Cat. Many know New Orleans' The Generationals from their debut album "Con Law" (Park The Van); however, you might not be aware of Athens' own Laminated Cat, who recently released their debut album "Umbrella Weather" through Garden Gate Records. The label started by Robert Schneider's wife Marci Schneider and his collaborator in their musical side project Thee American Revolution and an engineer contributor to Travellers in Space and Time, Craig Morris. "We choose bands to tour with based on who will we want to listen to every single night, and who we want to turn other people on to," enthuses Schneider. "The Generationals are a fantastic band with strong songs and interesting productions - plus we have the Louisiana connection going on, with my having grown up in Ruston. Laminated Cat are the best young psychedelic band in the world, in my opinion - beautiful and strange, like Syd Barrett riding on the Olivia Tremor Control. This tour is going to be awesome!"

(antiMusic) Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. It has been almost 20 years since New York City boogied to the sounds of funk music legends The Funky Knights. But they are back and today bassist Randy Pratt tells us about "Can't Afford It," a song from their forthcoming CD. "Can't Afford It" was one of the first songs we did in '89. It's part of what I came to refer to as our "inner city suite", a collection of sexy love songs charactered by realistic, druggie low-lifes on the fringe of society and the law(like we were, ourselves) It's about a guy who's just pulled his life together and gotten off drugs. He runs into one of his old "drugs/sex" partners on the street and she tries to pull him back. It's eerie and dark and the groove is sexy, implying the lurid porno life they had enjoyed. Bill sells it like no one else could. You can feel the tension, but there's a little humor there, too. Bill's a simple keyboard player. He doesn't sit around and practice at home, but he's such a smart, funky guy, that his fills are always amazing. His keys really add to the creepy feel of the song. Paul Latimer, our secret weapon , plays his usual restrained, Jimmy Nolen influenced funk riffing, which weaves magically with my simple, nasty bass part. Paul is super funky on drums and Reids guitar solos hit it out of the stadium. (Yeah, we're cool, I admit it!) Stay tuned for more to come from the band, but in the meantime keep tabs on their

Worldwide—With over 30,000 views and rising, the "Fire Breather" video's presence on YouTube has certainly made an impact. Coming across as a band with a philosophy, The Unravelling has created a cult-like following that continues to grow as fast as the hits on You Tube. This is music with a real message; heart pounding music for the masses that forces the listener to think. Just as the "Fire Breather" Tibetan video is a raw depiction of a wicked truth, and thus being a powerful musical piece, their new album "13 Arcane Hymns" is sure to be a worldwide hit filled with music with a message.""Fire Breather" was written as a stream of consciousness, states The Unravelling's Steve Moore. There was no particular theme in mind besides the very personal lyrics. After recording the song and reading the news in 2009 of the intensive struggle of the Tibetan people, and how on some occasions the Tibetan monks would even set themselves on fire as a means of protest - self sacrifice, I was amazed at the parallels between their struggle and the lyrics in the song, and I'm happy it has this kind of double meaning now." There is no doubt that The Unravelling makes one think, listen and open their minds to a wider world view and awareness. Hailing from Calgary, Canada, the members are inspired by a very diverse range of artists, such as Dead Can Dance, Tool, Opeth, Nine Inch Nails, Arcana, Jeff Buckley and Dillinger Escape Plan. At first listen an audience can without a doubt hear those influences. Especially in "Fire Breather," a strong Opeth and Nine Inch Nails vibe is felt. Pure Grain Audio describes their sound as "tactfully diverse music that's overflowing with a bloodthirsty passion." The album is expected to be released this Spring but for now you can check out the video

Strand Of Oaks Announce Us Tour Dates. Strand of Oaks is Timothy Showalter, an Indiana Mennonite turned Pennsylvania Hebrew Dayschool teacher who even drives the school bus for extra cash (and has sing-alongs with the pupils as they ease on down the road). While escaping a relationship gone worse, Showalter returned home one day to a house burned down, leaving all of his earthly possessions charred in flames. Spending nights in downtown hotels and on park benches with a borrowed guitar, he began to face the proverbial demons. Like any good roller coaster ride there came an upside, as inspiration grew like weeds within the rubble; songs led to shows, which led to tours of the US and UK with Jason Anderson and Kimya Dawson. Leave Ruin, Showalter's 2009 release on La Société Expéditionnaire, took shape shortly thereafter while touring and collaborating with Lewis & Clarke's Lou Rogai (who stepped in as producer, arranger and musician on Leave Ruin.) Taking cues from such luminaries as Neil Young (On the Beach era) and a burgeoning Springsteen, Showalter extends his musical gesture and searches to find modesty in the midst of confusion, addressing insecurities and settling existential debt with a simple and beautiful delivery. The personification of a Midwestern Grandfather's advice, his songs smack with hard truth and poignant severity, from child-like naivete to heart worn wisdom... sparse guitar, hammond, rhodes and wooden instruments support an atmosphere that is tender and raw, at times uncomfortable, shockingly candid, and unforgettable.
