Music Legend Says No To Joining Van Halen
Not many musicians would turn down a gig with Van Halen. But most musicians aren't Jeff Berlin. We received the following announcement about Berlin's new album, 'High Standards,' but the part about Van Halen was so compelling that we had to lead with it. So read on for that story and details about his new album! Jeff Berlin's resume reads like the who's who of the higher echelon of music artists. Jeff Berlin was even asked to join Van Halen, an invitation that he actually turned down.

"Eddie Van Halen was a fan of the band that I played in with Bill Bruford," Berlin recalls. "We met and started to hang out and jam together. He was a sweet terrific guy. One day he saw me play a gig with my group and then asked me if I would like to join Van Halen. After this, we rehearsed at David Lee Roth's house a couple of times. Ultimately, I said no to his gracious offer because when you join a band, you join the entirety of it, the life philosophy of its members and also the habits that they may be involved with. I felt that, in terms of activities and attitudes, I didn't mesh with their vision of things. I didn't wish to be mercenary and just take the job for money because it wouldn't be fair to the band members. So, I just said no to the offer."

Jeff Berlin is a legend of the electric bass, considered by many to be the finest electric bass player in the world. A true master of the bass, Jeff Berlin has played with the likes of Bill Bruford, George Benson, Allan Holdsworth, and even toured with original members of Yes (Anderson, Wakeman, Bruford, Howe) on only three days' notice. Much to the anticipation of his fans, Jeff is releasing a new jazz trio CD on his own MAJ Records label titled 'High Standards'. - more on this story

Rarities CDs From Clapton, Skynyrd, Cream, Marvin Gay, Velvet Underground and More Released
Comprised of essential collector's tracks associated with a classic album from a classic artist, Rarities Editions from Eric Clapton, Bob Marley, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cream, Marvin Gaye, The Velvet Underground, Meat Loaf and The Commitments were released on April 27, 2010 (physical and digital) by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). Originally issued as the bonus CD in the Deluxe Edition series, these discs are now available individually, at a single-album price, for the first time.

--Eric Clapton – 461 Ocean Boulevard – (Rarities Edition) (Polydor/UMe): Clapton's 1974 album 461 Ocean Boulevard stands as a milestone in his revered catalog, the album on which he reinvented himself as a solo artist with some of his most personal music. Musicians on the disc then served as his backing ensemble on tour, which concluded with a triumphant two-night stand at London's Hammersmith Odeon that December. Those concerts provide the tracks on this Rarities Edition, from versions of "I Shot The Sheriff," "Let It Grow," "Badge," "Layla" and "Can't Find My Way Home" to a bittersweet rendition of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" and an extended medley of blues originally by Elmore James, Robert Johnson, and Freddie King.

--Cream – Disraeli Gears – (Rarities Edition) (Polydor/UMe): An inspired collision of blues, jazz, folk and psychedelia, 1967's Disraeli Gears brought Cream (Eric Clapton, bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker) to America's mainstream attention, spawning a major hit in "Sunshine Of Your Love" and durable classic rock standards in "Strange Brew," "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and "Swlabr." This Rarities Edition presents the album's rare mono mix with an assortment of vintage stereo demos and mono and stereo outtakes that demonstrate the creativity and imagination, curiosity and playfulness, that was Cream. - more on this story

Singled Out: Sick Of It All's Death or Jail
Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Sick Of It All singer Lou Koller tells us about "Death or Jail" from their brand new album "Based On A True Story" (which incidentally scored five stars from antiMusic's Brodie). We now turn it over to Lou for the story:

We wrote the song 'Death or Jail' about friends of ours that broke away and ended up following a path that led them to self-destruction or incarceration. We all know people who have made these huge mistakes and it's a really difficult thing to explain, especially when they come from the same place and common background. They don't just turn their backs on their friends because it's as if they're turning their backs on themselves, shutting themselves into a reality that can offer nothing but stress, violence and wickedness.

Thank goodness we had the outlet of hardcore to help us vent our frustrations, or we all might have found ourselves in a similar place. This song is dedicated to those friends that we wish could have made better choices.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself, check out the brand new video and learn more about the album - right here!

Great Divide Announce Debut Release
At seven members strong, Great Divide's music fuses soul, roots and blues-rock into a collaborative sound, blending each member's influences and personality to create their enthusiastic brand of earnest, down home rock and roll. It's fitting, then, that members Teddy (guitar, vocals, harmonica), Jeff (piano, organ, Rhodes, Clavinet), Josh (drums, percussion), Joey (guitar), Hiro (bass), Eric (tenor and baritone sax) and Jake (trombone and trumpet) credit listening to their families' record collections as kids for shaping their style. Little Feat, Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers and The Band are just a few of the countless artists Great Divide cites as inspiration.

The band's family approach to their music is equally apparent on-stage, and in the studio on their debut full-length, Reservoir.

Set for release on May 4th, Reservoir was recorded in Detroit, MI in 2008, just before Great Divide relocated to Chicago. The guys quickly realized that tracking together in the live room without isolation naturally captured the raw energy of their on-stage performances and allowed each band member to feed off of one another's input. After laying down the funk infused "Freedom Bell," the soul-drenched "Do Me Right," barroom, bluesy "Rainey Bethea Blues" and the smoky, ambling "Waters Roll In" in that technique at the White Room, Great Divide wrapped up the album's remaining nine tracks at Roshambo Studios in Ferndale, MI. The organic feel of their music is what propelled the session forward, but what sets the recording apart is the sound captured by an arsenal of vintage and boutique gear that Great Divide incorporated into their session.

Intervurt Give Fans The Fear
Intervurt have released the track "The Fear" from their upcoming Mark Plati (David Bowie, Prince, The Cure) produced debut album, "Union" online. Intervurt's debut album hits stores June 29th, 2010 through FOF Label Group/EMI.

"The Fear was one of the tracks we spent a lot of time on in pre-production and possibly the song we feared the most. It is a complex song with intricate arrangements and a killer chorus," commented guitarist Mark Alberici. "This song was influenced by a break-up, and how sometimes it's harder to give up the friendship by having to take a leap of faith. We don't really write with other artists in mind, but once we recorded this we thought it would be great if a country singer did a version of it. It has a swing feel to it and that fits the backwards and forwards idea of the final days of a relationship."

Intervurt brew a smoking cauldron that bleeds light into dark, bending sound around an infectious blend of musicianship, melody and manic tones. The results marry Muse, the Killers and Queens of the Stone Age into a twisted aural honeymoon . The group's debut was recorded at Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios (David Bowie, The Rolling Stones) in New York City and was produced by Mark Plati (David Bowie, Prince, The Cure) and Tom McKay (Joydrop).

Ape Machine's Debut Coming Next Week
Ape Machine releases their debut album, This House Has Been Condemned, on May 4, 2010. Self-released through their own Ape Machine Music, this 5 piece from Portland, OR blends equal parts rock n' roll, blues, stoner rock and psychedelia.

The name Ape Machine, which is a nod to the days of reel-to-reel recording, captures the heady mix of animal aggression and technical precision in the music. Featuring ex-members of Slow Dance recording artist Evening Episode, Grey Day Record's Minmae, plus MCA's Fenix TX, the band's mission is to combine intense melody, cutting riffs and blistering live improvisation. Where many bands rely on meticulously rehearsed, just-like-the-record-parts, Ape Machine provides a live experience that is as unique as each evening it shares with an audience. Molten countenance, decibel therapy!

Each member of Ape Machine contributes to the songwriting and adds their individual strengths and ideas to arrangement, riffs, and transitions. Singer, Caleb Heinze explains, "The music knows where it lives and our job is to help it find its way home. We can accomplish this by not forcing ourselves on it but flirting with it and and getting it a little drunk... then it's easy." Guitarist, Ian Watts adds, "A lot of our songs have been written in our bassist Brian's little kitchen over a 12-pack and a joint." - more on this story
