antiMusic reports: Beau Velasco, co-founder of electro-punk group The Death Set, died Sunday. A cause of death has not yet been released but the band issued two statements on their website. Johnny Siera wrote of his fallen bandmate: "R.I.P. my dear brother, friend and band mate Beau Velasco. We are all so devastated that I will keep this short. We love you and you will be missed. You affected us all so much in the most positive ways. Our lives would not be as is if not for you. We love you. For all those who wish to pay their respects we will let the details be known soon." The band posted this statement on their news page: Beau Velasco, beloved brother and co-founding member of The Death Set, passed away Sunday, September 27, in Brooklyn, New York. Columbia Records reports: John Mayer's Battle Studies will be released on November 17th, 2009 on Columbia Records. The seven-time Grammy Award winner's fourth studio album was co-produced by John Mayer and Steve Jordan and debuts three years after his critically acclaimed 2006 album, Continuum. Incorporating the warmth, melodies and simplicity of 70's and 80's California rock/pop, Battle Studies is a confessional, relaxed and liberated album recorded in a private home in California where Mayer lived and worked over the course of six months before wrapping at the famed Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. The album's first single, "Who Says" challenges conventional standards of what one can accomplish or undertake - despite society's constraints. Battle Studies also showcases universal themes on "Heartbreak Warfare," "Assassin," and "War of My Life," while flexing guitar chops on "Rock Song," and a reinterpretation of "Crossroads." The famously collaborative guitar player also invited one of music's brightest new talents, Taylor Swift, to appear on "Half of My Heart."

PR reports: Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Rod Stewart will be releasing SOULBOOK on October 27th (J Records), a collection of classic Sixties/Seventies-era soul favorites, all newly recorded by the quintessential "blue eyed soul" singer of our generation. Rod Stewart possesses one of the most distinctive and interpretive voices in music -- his Grammy-Award winning recordings of the Great American Songbook have sold over 19 million albums and is the biggest selling ongoing series of new music recordings in history. With the same passion, Rod approaches some of the greatest soul songs ever written. Rod recently said in Rolling Stone's "Greatest Singers of All Time" issue that at the age of 15, he used to listen to soul singers on the radio like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, and blues singers like Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters, and knew that is how he wanted to sing. Elton John said "Bar none, Rod's the best singer I've heard in rock 'n' roll. He's also the greatest white soul singer" and in 2006, James Brown called Stewart "the best white soul singer." Comments Rod Stewart: "This is the album I've waited my whole lifetime to record. These are the songs that I've danced to, made love to, cried to and yes, even fell on the floor to as a young man in the infancy of my career. These songs and singers were the oxygen that fueled my passion to sing. When I was a skinny, cocky, all-mouth and trousers teenager living in North London without two pennies to rub together, I discovered the artistry of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, The Temptations, The Four Tops and so many more. They were my Gods and my heroes."

conqueroo reports: In 1971, the song was everywhere. "Who is the man who would risk his neck for his brother man?" Shaft? Damn right. Isaac Hayes' Shaft soundtrack album became a #1 album on both the pop and R&B charts and remained on the charts for a jaw-dropping 60 weeks. The first soul soundtrack to a major motion picture would earn Hayes a Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe and set him on his way to stardom. The soundtrack continues to influence popular music hip-hop in particular. On November 3, 2009, Stax Records, a unit of Concord Music Group, will release Shaft (Deluxe Edition), a digitally remastered reissue of the soundtrack including a bonus track: "Theme From Shaft [2009 Mix]." Ashley Kahn, author of several music books, contributor to NPR's "Morning Edition" and adjunct professor at New York University, wrote the liner notes for the deluxe edition. A primary reason for the enduring significance of the ultimate Blaxploitation film Shaft is Hayes' score. He created music that sounded like nothing else of its day. "The one thing I've learned from Shaft," Hayes told The New York Times in 1972, "is that pop music doesn't set any restrictions anymore. You don't just have to go up there and sing a song because that's the way it was always done before. Use whatever means necessary, be it rap, song or arrangement, to get to the people."

PR reports: Academy Fight Song is proud to announce the release of Person L's second full-length record, The Positives, on November 17th. In anticipation of the forthcoming release, the band will be exclusively premiering the new album's title track on their Myspace page today, September 29th. Following the DIY nature of Initial, Person L's 2008 self-released debut, the band looked to Aaron Marsh, lead musician and producer of the band Copeland, to produce The Positives at his home studio, The Vanguard Room. Marsh helped the band forge a new sound which clearly represents a huge departure from frontman Kenneth Vasoli's former band, The Starting Line. A major contribution was helping them to bring to the fore the band's trademark complex rhythms with their unique use of percussion and two drummers. "We were aiming to keep a very raw and dirty quality to the record while still making it comprehensive and colorful," notes Vasoli. Person L recently wrapped up dates with Ace Enders and a Million Different people, and have confirmed a co-headlining tour with John Nolan (Straylight Run) this fall. The tour will kick off in Cleveland, OH, on November 10th and will continue through December 12th in the band's hometown of Philadelphia, PA. Prior to these dates, Vasoli will be embarking on a very special solo acoustic tour through Australia in October. The band will also be headlining at World Cafι Live in Philadelphia on November 9th for the release party of "Somebody's Gonna Miss Us," the CD/ DVD from The Starting Line.
