Kathleen Edwards Sets Release
PR reports: On March 4, 2008, Zoe/Rounder Records will release Kathleen Edwards' Asking for Flowers her first new album in three years, and the acclaimed artist's most penetrating collection to date. The album features eleven new songs, all written by Edwards, and finds her performing at the peak of her creative powers, supported by a group of master backing musicians. Flowers was recorded in 2007, mostly at Plyrz Studio in Los Angeles. The album was co-produced by Edwards and Jim Scott (Whiskeytown), and features, among others, keyboardist Benmont Tench from The Heartbreakers, drummer Don Heffington (Bob Dylan, The Wallflowers), bassist Bob Glaub (Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, Leonard Cohen), guitarist Colin Cripps (Sarah McLachlan, Bryan Adams), and pedal steel ace Greg Leisz (Sheryl Crow, Wilco, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss). - more on this story

C.C. Banana Remembers Kevin DuBrow
PR reports: Rock & roll comic C.C. Banana has updated his blog with his thoughts on the untimely passing of rock legend Kevin DuBrow: It's three days later and I still feel like I've been punched in the gut. I just can't seem to wrap my head around the notion of Kevin DuBrow actually dying. Those two things just don't want to go together in my mind. I barely knew the man, yet I still feel like I've lost a close friend. I haven't felt the loss of someone this badly since Kiss drummer Eric Carr died 16 years ago (almost to the day, oddly enough).

Maybe it's because Kevin and Quiet Riot have been heroes of mine since I was a kid. Maybe it's because I had the honor of interviewing the man in 2005. Maybe it's because Kevin and the entire QR crew have been exceptionally kind to me at each and every encounter (despite my constant concerns about coming across as nothing but an overgrown fanboy). Regardless, news of Kevin's death is wholly shocking and bizarre to me and I think I'm still in denial about the whole thing.

Part of me wants to write more about the matter, but I find myself hesitant to do so... perhaps because doing so will make it all finally, horribly real. Damn. I can't believe I'll never see another Quiet Riot concert. I can't believe I'll never hear another new Quiet Riot album. I can't believe any of this is actually happening. If anybody is interested in reading my one and only interview with Kevin DuBrow - I've linked it.

The Shondes Tour
PR reports: The Shondes, a Brooklyn, NY quartet taking its name from the Yiddish word for "shame" or "disgrace" has launched a winter tour to preface the release of its debut album, The Red Sea produced by Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu, They Might Be Giants, Book Of Knots) in early 2008.

The Shondes' dramatic rock has been compared to Sleater-Kinney, Patti Smith and Rasputina, but audiences tend to marvel at the band's urgent, genre-breaching live sound.

The Shondes' songwriting fuses the various musical traditions of feminist punk, classical, Jewish and queercore, while the band's vocal melodies move effortlessly from anthemic to haunting -- textured by the distinct qualities of each of their voices. The result is a unique sound that is both heartbreaking and hopeful. - yadda yadda yadda - get the dates here

36 Crazyfists Begin Recording
PR reports: Alaska based rockers 36 Crazyfists are currently in the studio working on their Ferret Music debut, which they have titled The Tide And It's Takers. The band is pleased about the partnership with Ferret who are responsible for launching the careers of 36 Crazyfists' contemporaries including; Funeral For A Friend, From Autumn To Ashes, and Killswitch Engage.

36 Crazyfists have just completed writing and begin the recording process after Thanksgiving. The band will be having guitarist and backing vocalist, Steve Holt, sitting in the producer's chair. They have decided to work with Andy Sneap (Machine Head, Testament, As I Lay Dying) again on the mixing.

Lead singer Brock Lindow had this to say, "We could not be happier to be on Ferret Music, We are all big fans of the bands on the roster as well as the people who run the label. We will be out on tour in January starting with the UK and Europe first, looking forward to hitting the road and seeing all of our friends again."

CD for the Troops
PR reports: Just in time for the holidays, 13 major recording artists have created a musical "Thank You" for the troops. "CD for the Troops" will be available for anyone with a valid military identification card to download at no cost from the Army and Air Force Exchange Service Web site, www.aafes.com.

Getting this project, which combined the music of Billy Joel, Montgomery Gentry, the Goo Goo Dolls, Jewel, Josh Groban, Los Lonely Boys, Melissa Ethridge, the Neville Brothers, Sarah McLachlan, the Lt. Dan Band, Brooks & Dunn, The Fray, and Five For Fighting, to troops' ears took true teamwork. John Ondrasik, the singer-songwriter who performs under the stage name "Five For Fighting," was intimately involved with making sure that happened.

"Beyond the artists and managers, all the record companies and publishers had to approve free downloads to over 1.5 million potential users," he said. "(It) also could not have been achieved without the financial, logistical, and emotional support of (the Recording Industry Association of America), AAFES, TriWest Health Care Alliance, America Supports You, Media Base and Sony Manufacturing."

Revisit The Great Nostalgia
PR reports: Bob Harris, keyboardist/vocalist of the 1980 Frank Zappa band with guitarists Steve Vai, Ray White and Ike Willis, keyboardist Tommy Mars, bassist Arthur Barrow and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, will soon have his 1986 album The Great Nostalgia released in an expanded format by Crossfire Publications. The Great Nostalgia, originally a self-financed release on his Mastahna label, has been remastered (and in some cases remixed) from the original session tapes.

More than twenty-one years after its first release, The Great Nostalgia has been expanded by six additional tracks. Frank Zappa heard the album in 1986 and thought that the track "Ageless Love" was outstanding and should kick off the album. Bob Harris, who is currently working with '80s rock legends Axe, wanted to change the song order because he highly valued Zappa's opinion, but the album had already been pressed. Out of respect for Frank Zappa, "Ageless Love" is now the first track on Crossfire's reissue, and Jeremy Barber's violin has replaced the original keyboard emulation of that instrument. - more on this story

Tom Savell Teams with Aynsley Dunbar for new CD
PR reports: Santa Cruz based rocker Tom Savell spent a marathon extended weekend November 15-19 holed up in his Stone Crest Studio with legendary drummer Aynsley Dunbar.

The sessions were two-fold: On Thursday and Friday, they rehearsed for the 13th Annual Decemberchild Benefit Concert that was held on Saturday at the Felton Community Hall in Felton, California. The proceeds from this concert were donated, as they are every year, to the Valley Churches United Missions to benefit their many programs for the needy.

Savell and Dunbar were also recording for Dunbar's upcoming, as yet untitled album set for release on SPV Records in Europe and on iTunes worldwide. Savell, who recently released his eclectic solo debut You Just Gotta Love It, appears on five of the ten songs; he also wrote the track "Tough To Beat" and co-wrote "Mourning." Dunbar is a legendary English drummer who has worked with the early lineup of Journey, Jefferson Starship, Lou Reed, John Mayall, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, David Bowie and Whitesnake. - tomsavell.com

.... Review: Puddle of Mudd - Famous
Famous is exactly what you'd expect from PoM, meaning it's always inoffensive, often catchy and never innovative. There's really no reason to spend money on the CD. But if one of its singles comes on the radio, there's probably no need to change the station. (2.5 stars) - Read the full Puddle of Mudd - Famous review

.... Rock Reads - Can't Buy Me Love: The Beatles, Britain and America
Gould has created in this what can only fairly be described as the ultimate musician's guide to song writing and producing. Most of the analysis, obviously, centers on the genius and the occasionally not-so-genius words and music of The Beatles.
