March
13 |
Kayos reports: Not to attach any undue significance
to the March 13 release of November Rain In Paradise City, an unauthorized
biographical documentary DVD of Guns N’ Roses, but Locomotive Records will
also spill beer (re-releasing Tankard’s 2000 Kings Of Beer on March 13),
transmit a virus (by releasing Heavenly’s all-new second album, Virus,
on March 13), ultimately resulting in World Chaos on March 13 (a re-release
of the 1990 Holy Moses album). Never has the metal community gone through
so much drama in one day.[see full story for more info on each release]-

Secondhand
Serenade Hit |
MSO reports: Indie phenomenon SECONDHAND SERENADE
is JOHN VESELY, a one-man show hailing from Menlo Park, CA. His mix of
extremely heartfelt music and poetic lyrics has caused a strong reaction
with fans through MySpace. This underground buzz and word-of-mouth propelled
him to reach and stay at the top unsigned artist position on MySpace for
four months. As of today, SECONDHAND SERENADE has reached over 17,692,067
plays on MySpace, an incredible feat for an artist just now signed by an
indie label. After selling over 15,000 copies of his debut acoustic album
Awake on his own through a PayPal account, John signed on with Daniel Glass
as part of his newly formed Glassnote Records. Last week (2/6), the label
released AWAKE with two new songs--”It’s Not Over” and “Take Me With You”--and
it has debuted at #16 and #8 on the Billboard “Top Heatseekers” chart and
the “Alternative New Artist” albums chart, respectively. AWAKE marks the
first-ever release for Glassnote Records which is distributed through ILG
(Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group).
Later this month, SECONDHAND SERENADE will
team up with Butch Walker and Danny Lohner to produce his debut full-length.
The new album--which will feature a full band--will be released at the
end of the summer.- Click

Jesus
And Mary Chain Reunion Shows |
CMJ reports: After a nearly decade-long drought,
the world will again taste the live, dripping distortion of the Jesus And
Mary Chain. Asked why a reunion, why now, Mary Chain's Jim Reid responded
via press release, "Why not?" According to the release, both Reid and his
brother William had wanted to reunite for quite some time, their last performance,
in 1998, being "such a bloody awful mess... that [it] was no way for the
Mary Chain to end." As their redemptive rock'n'roll Hail Mary, the Mary
Chain will take on the Coachella Festival in April and the Spanish Summercase
Festival in July. As of yet, there are no plans for future shows or a new
Jesus And Mary Chain record, though Jim Reid stated, "Maybe." [see full

Kevin
Devine Dropped |
CMJ reports: Rumors are swirling about which
artists will be dropped from Capitol Music Group after the merger of Capitol
with Virgin in January. Today, New York native Kevin Devine posted a MySpace
blog confirming that he is no longer at the label. After playing a show
in Nashville last week, his manager informed him of the news. According
to Devine, the label decided to go in a different direction without him,
however allowing him to shop around his Capitol release, Put Your Ghost
To Rest.
"It was definitely a roll of the dice to
begin with," Devine explained exclusively to CMJ. "I guess I feel the music
industry is such a dissolving dinosaur I don’t think it matters anymore
where you sign. But we've had a good relationship with the people [at Capitol].
No smoke and mirrors. I guess that has helped us in the end."

Johnnie
Taylor Reissue |
conqueroo reports: Johnnie Taylor, one of
the greatest soul singers who ever lived, was at the peak of his game on
September 23, 1972, when he sang to an effusive crowd at the now-defunct
Summit Club in South Los Angeles. The show was captured on tape and will
be reissued February 20 by Stax Records as Johnnie Taylor: Live at the
Summit Club. The live album, produced by Al Bell, the then-president of
Stax Records, was recorded at the time of the historic two-day Wattstax
concert at nearby Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Wattstax bill was
filled, so Stax put many of its artists into nearby clubs where they were
taped and filmed. As well as including his biggest hits (“Who’s Making
Love,” “Jody’s Got Your Girl and Gone”), the album contains six previously
unreleased tracks that emphasize the blues side of Taylor’s repertoire.
Label-mate Rufus Thomas said of Taylor in his introduction: “When you speak
of blues, this is a man who knows ‘em from the letter A to the letter Z.”

Cabras
Videos |
PR reports: "Cabras" film director Fredy Polania
has entered his latest music video into the running for inclusion on Steven
Spielberg's upcoming reality show "On the Lot". "On the Lot," executive-produced
by Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg, will give aspiring filmmakers from
around the world the chance to earn a $1-million development deal at DreamWorks.
The show is premiering Spring 2007 on the Fox network.
Polania has chosen to keep the plot of
"Cabras", a self-described "philosophical thriller" due out in 2008, under
a tight lid, and has been mainly promoting the "Cabras" soundtrack. Polania
is the first independent film director to shoot music videos for every
artist on a film soundtrack - a total of 20 artists. He approaches the
soundtrack by choosing what are, in his view, the best independent artists
from around the world. Hailing from the United States are New Crash Position,
Lauren Briant, Bizarre from D-12, Antedote The Neato Project, A New Way
Down, The Morning After, and Cede. International artists include Canada's
Inner Surge, Latvia's Detlef's Zoo, Switzerland's Manana, and Israel's
Squid, with more on the way. Video downloads and mp3's for these artists
are available at www.cabrassoundtrack.com.

Bag: A Bad Case of Gelos |
DayinRock reports: We haven't had a mailbag
in a while and this week seemed opportune as we have received a few notable
emails this week. Here are the highlights:
Kenny A write: (asking for a correction)
It was Sinead O'Connor ripping up the picture on SNL, not Prince. [referring
to the stupid joke in the Britney article from Monday]
Answer: Yes and that was the joke. The
Prince reference was to the fact that the Purple One® wrote Sinead's
hit "Nothing Compares 2 U".
Nikki writes: How come you have totally
ignored the tragic death of Anna Nicole Smith?
Answer: Did she make music? Plus we figured
the 24/7 coverage by all the tabloids and cable "News" channels provided
more than enough information about the death of this "important" figure.
Finally, we honestly didn't give a damn and didn't think many of our readers
would either. But her death and the overwhelming coverage does tell you
a little about our society. A former president died recently and got only
passing mention, even on political shows, and someone like Smith dies and
the media coverage has been almost wall to wall. Imagine the coverage overload
if she had died in Aruba! Esp on Broken Record with Greta Van Botox.
Amber writes: Oasis is not a second rate
anything let alone Beatles! They are nothing like the Beatles and so much
better. They are the most original band in the world so stop hating on
them because your gelos
Answer: Trying to stop laughing enough
to respond. Is gelos® a new disease that causes hearing loss and lowers
the IQ? But you are right; we shouldn't have called Oasis a second rate
Beatles. They are more like a fourth rate watered down Beatles without
the originality or songwriting skill. Then again, Ringo is probably jealous
of them. Thank you for providing further proof of why we need to add chlorine
to the gene pool.
