PR reports: We got an interesting email today
from one of the PR companies we work with. We bring this to your attention
because last month a reader asked us about ways to discover new bands (aside
from our news and reviews) and this seems to fit the bill. It also allows
you to help the bands you discover. Sounds pretty cool to us. Here is the
press blurb followed by a link to check it out.
Imagine if you will the power to make someone's
career with the click of a mouse. OurStage does just that, putting control
back in the hands of the people. Like "American Idol" meets "The Lot" on
the internet, contestants submit their own music and films to be judged
by viewers on the site. It's easy watch videos, listen to music and vote
on what you like. Judging videos is fun and addictive and there are lots
of categories to choose from. Pick your favorites in comedy, animation,
indie rock, hip hop and many others.
Through its wealth of partner programs,
including Paste, CMJ, PLUG Awards, Slamdance, Relix, Gen Art, Noise Pop,
Videomaker, IFFBoston, and many others, OurStage offers artists real opportunities
to launch their careers. Each month winners in film and music are chosen
for a grand prize of $5,000 each as well as other tangible rewards like
promotion in mainstream outlets and festival spots. -

PR reports: Tony Defries, the legendary rock
manager who launched David Bowie and whose groundbreaking innovations form
the bedrock of modern media presentation, is breaking a career-long silence
to publish his long-awaited autobiography, Gods And Gangsters.
A key figure behind some of the most crucial
events and developments in contemporary music history, Defries was present
at the birth of Madonna, the reincarnation of Stevie Wonder, the death
of the Beatles and the ignition of Iggy. But he has never been interviewed,
never made public declarations, never opened up and revealed his innermost
truths.
Told now for the very first time, Gods
And Gangsters is the story behind a career spent managing, marketing, and
branding superstars - from the fashion idols of the Pop Art 60s to the
rock gods of the 70s and 80s. Written with renowned music historian Dave
Thompson, the book is projected for publication in 2008.

PR reports: On September 18, Lost Highway
will release Between Daylight And Dark, the new album from critically-acclaimed
singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier, of whom Entertainment Weekly says, "The
beauty of Gauthier's country noir lies in the humanity of her characters,
and in the sweet yearning of her gruff Louisiana drawl."
Between Daylight And Dark is Gauthier's
fifth album and the follow up to her 2005 breakthrough Mercy Now, which
garnered high praise in the media. Gauthier was named 2005 NEW/EMERGING
ARTIST OF THE YEAR by the Americana Music Association.
Between Daylight And Dark was cut live,
with minimal overdubs, and produced by Joe Henry. The album features guest
appearances by Van Dyke Parks (piano on "Can't Find The Way") and Loudon
Wainwright (backing vocals on "Soft Place To Land" and "I Ain't Leaving").

PR reports: California Transit Authority (CTA)
is drummer Danny Seraphine's trip back to the future, effectively tipping
his hat to his past as a founding member of the Grammy award-wining band
Chicago, with his feet firmly planted in the here and now. Aptly titled
"Full Circle," California Transit Authority's debut album brings Seraphine
back to his roots.
"Full Circle" will be released on August
14 (Street Sense Records) through Borders as well as online outlets such
as Amazon.com. While the album revisits early Chicago classics such as
"I'm A Man" and "Make Me Smile," CTA has also penned a new original track,
"Several Thousand."
On August 9th, Danny and the band will
be performing in the city of Chicago for the first time in 17 years at
Borders flagship store to celebrate the album's release.-

PR reports: Necessary/Atlantic recording group
Hard-Fi has unveiled details of their eagerly anticipated second album.
Entitled "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST," the 11-track collection arrives
in the U.S. on September 18th.
The album - which follows last year's breakthrough
debut, "STARS OF CCTV" - sees the British band returning with a fully loaded
arsenal of category-defying pop grenades, melding genre-hopping beats,
Motown hooks, and rock 'n' roll swagger into its own indefinable, undeniable
sound. "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" is highlighted by the Billy Bragg-inspired
"We Need Love," the rousing "Can't Get Along Without You," and the anthemic
first single, "Suburban Knights," which NME recently hailed as a "startling"
example of "a more dexterous and inventive Hard-Fi."-
