New Venom
Blabbermouth reports: British "black metal"
pioneers VENOM have commenced work on the follow-up to 2000's "Resurrection",
according to a post at the VENOM fan site Site Of The Hydra. "Cronos and
Antton have arisen from Darkest Hell, and are due to start rehearsals and
record new demos, etc, in the coming weeks. As ye freaks will know, this
album would have been released two years ago but for Cronos being injured
during a climbing accident during February 2002. So apart from the terrific
news of a new album, this also confirms that Cronos has almost recovered
from his injuries, and is raring to go!! This enforced layoff has left
Cronos and VENOM tearing at the leash to return, and give all us Legions
the next installment of 21st Century Black f***in' Metal!!" -

Congressional Breast Hearings
AP reports: A House panel looking into
indecency on the airwaves was hearing Wednesday from National Football
League Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Mel Karmazin, president of Viacom
Inc. — owner of both CBS, which aired Janet Jackson's breast-baring Super
Bowl halftime show, and MTV, which produced the show.
All five members of the Federal Communications
Commission also were expected to testify before the House Energy and Commerce
telecommunications subcommittee and at a separate hearing of the Senate
Commerce Committee.
The Super Bowl incident occurred at a time
when lawmakers are pressing the FCC to crack down on indecent programming.
The agency has received more than 200,000 complaints about the halftime
show, which ended with singer Justin Timberlake tearing off part of Jackson's
top and exposing her right breast to millions of TV viewers.
Bills have been introduced in both houses
of Congress that would increase the fines that the commission may levy
for indecency from $27,500 to $275,000. The commissioners have discussed
fining broadcasters for each prohibited utterance rather than for each
program. - Click

Oliveri Leaves QOTSA
VH1 reports: Queens of the Stone Age have
always had a revolving door of members, but at the heart of the band was
always the partnership of singer/guitarist Josh Homme and bassist Nick
Oliveri. Not anymore.
At a time when the band's lineup seemed
more stable than it had been in years, Oliveri has unexpectedly left the
band, breaking off a musical relationship with Homme that goes back to
their days playing together in Kyuss in the early '90s.
"A number of incidents occurring over the
last 18 months have led to the decision that the two can no longer maintain
a working partnership in the band," read a terse statement from the band's
management. On Queens of the Stone Age's Web site, Screaming Trees member
Van Conner is now listed as the group's bassist.- Click

Halen Tesla Denial
Melodic Rock reports: A little more Van
Halen, but not much - just a follow up on a previous note. Radio DJ Eddie
Trunk last week had a live call in with Tesla lead singer Jeff Keith. It
seems Jeff explained that the rumours of a Summer 2004 tour with Van Halen
are just that, rumours, and the band knows nothing about it.
It seems the guys have been told to do
some damage control. Nice attempt to put out the flames guys, but the fact
remains that Tesla were offered a support slot and have already gone on
record about it during various interviews over the last month or so, not
to mention singer Jeff Keith also telling me personally about the offer
and the band's thought's on it only a few weeks back. -

Less Tweeny Cash
Reuters reports: Music sales to teens
between the ages of 13 and 17 declined last year by 15 percent, due in
part to increased online file-sharing and competition from other entertainment,
research group NPD said on Tuesday. The age group usually accounts for
about 15 percent of music sales in dollars, according to Port Washington,
New York-based NPD, which found that video games software unit sales to
the same age group rose 12 percent in 2003 as music sales were falling.

It's the file sharing! Wait maybe it's the fact that you had less
teenybopper friendly music out in 2003. Timberlake aside, you didn't have
3 or 4 multiplatinum boybands.
Blockbusted
AP reports: Not long ago, movie and music
lovers crowded the aisles of video rental shops like Blockbuster and CD
stores like Tower Records.
Now, however, you won't find the likes
of Martin Sherman in stores like Blockbuster.
A computer instructor in Las Vegas, Sherman
switched to an online DVD service, Netflix, two months ago. His days of
combing the shelves for a copy of a hot movie, or queuing up for a cashier,
are over.
"I didn't like the hassle of going to the
store and waiting in a long line," Sherman said. "A lot of time, they were
out of stock."
Blockbuster's fortunes have been spiraling
for some time, and it took its latest hit Tuesday when Viacom Inc., the
media conglomerate that owns MTV and CBS, announced Tuesday it is getting
rid of its controlling stake in Blockbuster because of declining business.
It even decided to take a $1.3 billion write-off.
For its part Tower Records, long in trouble,
tumbled into Chapter 11 on Monday. - Click
