Metal Fan Kills Priest
Blabbermouth reports: A Chilean black metal fan killed an Italian Catholic priest two weeks ago, slitting his throat just after the priest had finished giving Mass at Santiago's Metropolitan Cathedral.

Horrified churchgoers heard Father Faustino Gazziero scream as he was attacked, but most did not actually see the killing as the priest had already walked away from the altar.

Authorities identified the assailant as Rodrigo Orias Gallardo, 25. Orias smeared his face with the victim's blood and then stabbed himself several times in the chest and neck with the same knife, several witnesses said.

Orias, who admitted that he made the 1,900-km journey to Santiago from his parents' hometown of Coyaique with the intention of murdering a priest, was rushed to a hospital and underwent surgery. He was under arrest.

He was reportedly not under the effect of drugs or alcohol at the time of the July 24 attack. [see full story for a lot more. For the truly morbid there are links to photos]- Click Here for the Full Story

Feds Raid KISS Expo
Blabbermouth reports: According to several postings at TommyThayerSucks.com, the KISS Expo in Charlotte, NC on Sunday (August 8) was raided by federal marshals and a lawyer representing KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons. Several thousand bootleg DVDs were confiscated in the raid but no one was arrested. Some Expo attendees even had DVDs that were given away as door prizes taken from them by the marshals. The crowd in attendance was shocked and outraged as bootlegs videos are a traditional part of all KISS Expos and Gene Simmons had allegedly been well aware of this for some time. Eagle Hospitalized
AP reports: Former Eagles bassist Randy Meisner, who co-wrote and sang the rock group's classic "Take It to the Limit," has been hospitalized for chest pains, his manager said.

Meisner, 58, was taken to Providence St. Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank Friday morning, his manager, Kevin White, told The Associated Press.

"He's resting comfortably. He's not experiencing any pain," White said Sunday. "He's doing well." [see full for more] - Click Here for the Full Story

Microphone Bomb Scare
AP reports: The next time Brian Teasley gets on a plane, he promises he'll ship his custom-made microphone. That same device shut down five gates at Dallas Fort Worth-International Airport last week.

Teasley, a member of Dallas-based pop-rock band Polyphonic Spree...had planned to do some recording at home, so he put the microphone in his suitcase...

A terminal area and several gates were closed briefly after a routine baggage screening detected the device, which raised concerns because of the wires and threading caps running through it. A bomb disposal robot removed it. [see full story for more, including his interesting homecoming]- Click Here for the Full Story

Libraries Ban CDs
Kansas.com reports: Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline's office this spring pulled more than 1,600 CDs out of shipments headed for state libraries because officials said they promoted violence or illegal activity, such as drug use or attacks on law enforcement.

The head of the Kansas Library Association said the group had no problem with the action. But Dick Kurtenbach, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union in Kansas and Western Missouri, said it was censorship.

Kline on Friday denied that he had censored the list, saying libraries can still buy the CDs rejected by his office. He said the settlement made clear that no explicit albums were to be sent to libraries, but some were included anyway.

The CDs were part of 51,000 given to states as part of a national consumer protection settlement. [see full story for more] - Click Here for the Full Story

Lars: Napster Suit Was About Control
Electric Basement reports: In an interview appearing at Electricbasement.com, METALLICA drummer LARS ULRICH talked about the band's controversial fight against NAPSTER, the company that allowed users to share songs illegally over the internet. "I wish that I had, I wish that I had known more about what we were getting into. We were really caught, we were ambushed, you know. Metallica, and I'm, this is what I'm proud of. Metallica always jumps, and we just jump and we don't stop and think much about where we are going to land. That was not one of our smoother landings on that one. And so I don't regret it, I am proud of the fact that we just jumped like we always did, and it was like okay, we'll go after these guys, but then once your out there you have to put your game face on and you can't kind of, you've got to stand out there for a while and that was pretty difficult to stand out there for two months going Bad Napster, can I go now? And so, it's just difficult. It's a difficult thing to do.

When asked if he felt the band was ambushed by negative feedback, he responds, "No, I think we were, no we were ambushed by um, we were ambushed by the lack of knowing what we had sort of got ourselves involved in. We were ambushed by not being aware of what this meant to people at grass roots, and being ambushed by maybe that we always felt in our selves that the points were clear but I think that ultimately, I don't' think, nobody really ever really understood that the only thing it was ever about was control. It was never about money, it was never about downloading, it was never about… It was just about control. Steven Tyler Solo Dispute
ArrowFM reports: Aerosmith has responded to a report last week from FoxNews.com's Roger Friedman that suggests guitarist Joe Perry is embittered over Steven Tyler's alleged plan to record a solo album. The Boston Herald recently spoke to band insiders regarding the report that Perry went "crazy" when he heard the news. "Why would he?" a friend of Tyler's told the paper. "Because if Steven is going to put out a solo album, it won't be for a while. Steven's been saying he's going to do a solo album for 10 years now, and Joe is always saying he's got enough music for a solo album. But they've got another Aerosmith album to put out after their break, and then they head out on tour again." Pixies CD Coming?
Xfm reports: According to reports, reformed legendary alt rock outfit Pixies are planning on recording an album of brand new material and frontman Frank Black has explained he has a rather unlikely producer in mind for the project.

The band, featuring the full original line up of Black, bassist Kim Deal, guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering last released an album (‘Trompe Le Monde’) back in 1991, two years before their split.

Now Black has stated they intend to record a new album, and has stated he would like equally legendary songwriter Tom Waits to produce the new record because "I like the way his records sound." [see full story for more] - Click Here for the Full Story

Napalm Death Plan Next CD
BW&BK reports: NAPALM DEATH are booked in Foel Studios in Wales during September and October to record their currently untitled, 11th studio album.

Vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway shared some new song titles with BW&BK. “One’s called ‘All Hail The Great Dawn’. Another one’s called ‘Diplomatic Immunity’. And one’s called ‘Pay For The Privilege Of Breathing’. There’s three for ya."

As far as a projected release date goes, "It’s going to come out in February (2005) hopefully," says Barney. "Basically, if you take the last two studio albums, Order Of The Leech and Enemy Of The Music Business, it’s going to be even more manic than those. Definitely that’s the way the material is shaping up.”

Russ Russell, who produced Leaders Not Followers Part 2 (due out on October 5th), will likely produce the new album as well. [see full story for a lot more]- Click Here for the Full Story

Silly News: Stupid Drunk
New York Daily News reports: [It's been a while since we've had a true non-music related silly news item. This one should get your Tuesday going in the right direction] VERNON, Vt. - It's not too often that the police get pulled over by a drunk driver. But that's what happened recently to Police Chief Ian McCollin.

McCollin was heading south on Route 142 when he noticed a driver at the Broad Brook Road stop sign, slowly edging forward into the intersection. As he passed the car, McCollin saw a confused look on the motorist's face.

"I figured it might be somebody looking for help, possibly lost or something," he said.

When McCollin pulled his cruiser to the shoulder, the man pulled alongside, rolled down his passenger-side window and made an astonishing proclamation: He was looking for a police officer to arrest him because he was drunk. Todd Rundgren DVD
press release reports: On August 10th[Today!] Todd Rundgren will release Utopia: Live in Boston 1982, the second DVD from his successful archival series that was launched in association with Sanctuary Records two years ago. Culled from Rundgren's personal library of footage he amassed during his 40 year career, the DVD not only includes a 90 minute concert, but an additional 90 minutes of completely new interview footage with all band members and has been remixed in 5.1 channel surround sound.

Utopia: Live In Boston 1982 was filmed during the band¹s concert to promote their latest album, Swing To The Right. Songs from Swing were rarely performed after that tour, making this concert footage highly coveted among Rundgren fans. Although "Hammer In My Heart" and "Princess Of The Universe" became staples of later tours, many of the other fine songs were performed infrequently, if at all, after 1982. Rarities include, "Libertine," "I'm Looking At You," "Say Yeah," and "Infrared & Ultraviolet."- Click Here for the Full Story
