(Gibson) Things are going well for Mumford & Sons. After wrapping up their current tour in support of their sophomore release Babel the band plan to take the rest of the year off before regrouping in 2014 to work on album number three, according to Mumford keyboardist Ben Lovett. When speaking to The Sun, Lovett also shared news about a possible future project for the band - making their own whiskey. Said Lovett: "It'll happen. It takes a few years to make, so we better cracking." Mumford & Sons aren't the first rockers to get in to the distillery business. For example, there's a Mot๖rhead Bastards Lager, KISS wine, and perhaps most successful of all - Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo Tequila. Hagar sold 80% of his interest in the company for a reported $80 million in 2007. Regarding the next Mumford & Sons album, Lovett says there are no plans yet in terms of what musical direction the band will take: "We're incredibly excited. Our third album can be anything we want it to be." more on this story

(Radio.com) Lana Del Rey is known for her retro style that she likes to call "gangster Nancy Sinatra." But there was a time long, long ago (we're talking pre-Lizzy Grant era) when Del Rey was still trying to find her sound. It's a time that Del Rey probably wouldn't want fans to know about. Unfortunately, Princess Superstar didn't feel the same way.The producer has released three tracks and one remix from a 2009 recording session she had with Del Rey, according to SPIN. Though the songs were never released, they show an early sign of what was to come from the singer. On "Maha Maha," which translates to "great," she croons (not always on key, unfortunately) like a lounge singer over a highly produced beat that has a bit of Middle Eastern influence. With the spacey track "Catch And Release," Del Rey seems like she was going for something a little Pink Floyd-inspired to focus on her current favorite topic, old Hollywood glamour. "If you've got the cash, lock it down tight/ I've got the looks. You've got my heart right?" she sings over a droning beat. Her track "Golden Grill" starts with a cacophony of fake horns before eventually going into an operatic solo from Del Rey. more on this story

(Radio.com) Brooklyn indie rock all-stars TV On the Radio are back with their first new studio recording in over two years. "Couldn't be more excited to be getting back into it, all together," singer/multi-instrumentalist Kyp Malone told Huffington Post, who premiered the track. "The new songs 'Mercy' and 'Million Miles' came to fruition with such ease that it felt like an invitation to get back to this good work." While we've yet to hear a studio version of the latter (you can find some live clips floating around YouTube), you can listen to the driving, new-wave pulse of "Mercy" here. It's unclear whether these two songs Malone mentions will appear on a forthcoming album, as the band recently parted ways with Interscope, who have put out all of the band's LPs, including their most recent, 2011′s Nine Types Of Light. If an album does appear, it will be on band member's Dave Sitek's record label, Federal Prism. "We're sort of collecting material for a record," singer Tunde Adebimpe told SPIN earlier this year, "but right now we're only thinking in terms of songs, smaller things we can put out regularly until an album seems possible. Which I love. It's not that you're less precious about the process, but I like coming in and saying, 'Let's make a couple songs,' not feeling any sort of pressure to lock ourselves in a room." more on this story

(Radio.com) Kip Moore's poignant single "Hey Pretty Girl" lands at No. 1 this week on the Mediabase country singles chart. This marks Moore's third consecutive No. 1, as "Hey Pretty Girl" follows his previous chart toppers of "Somethin' Bout A Truck" and "Beer Money." All three songs are from Moore's 2012 debut album Up All Night.Up All Night was the best-selling debut album from any country artist released last year. It's also the first country album released since 2008 to earn three back to back No. 1 songs. To understand why that last fact is impressive, note that Moore is only the third artist to achieve that since the chart's inception. Numbers aside, it's Moore's music that is the most impressive, and "Hey Pretty Girl" is no exception. Moore visited Radio.com recently and explained how the song came together. "Hey Pretty Girl," he explained, was written with one of his "dearest friends," Dan Couch (the pair also cowrote "Somethin' 'Bout a Truck"). Moore came up with the concept for "Hey Pretty Girl" after his guitar player, Dave Lapsley, came to him when he learned his wife was pregnant. "I met Dave right when I moved to town," Moore recalled. "Dave and I used to really hit the town hard together. He was my wild running mate. Dave settled down and got married, and about three years ago Dave's wife told him she was pregnant. I didn't have a record deal yet, and he was still trying to grind it out with me. He came to me and was like, 'My wife's pregnant, and I've got a kid on the way, and we need to make this thing happen now.'" Moore explained how there was a whole new dimension to his friend.

(Radio.com) Canadian alt-R&b star the Weekend (AKA Abel Tesfaye) continues to slink seductively towards the September 10 release date of his second album, Kiss Land, by revealing a new song from the set, "Love in the Sky."The brooding and atmospheric "Love in the Sky" is the third track to be previewed from the forthcoming Kiss Land, following "Belong to the World" and the album's title track. Like much of the Weeknd's notoriously lascivious catalog, the new song is filled with sexual innuendo and drug references among the heavy orchestral bombast. The Weeknd recently generated controversy of a different kind over the release of "Belong to the World," which many believed to contain a sample of Portishead's "Machine Gun," the first single from that band's 2008 full-length, Third. After Portishead producer Geoff Barrow called Tesfaye out on Twitter claiming that he denied the request to use Portishead's music, the Weeknd mastermind fired back that his song does not contain a sample from "Machine Gun." more on this story

(Radio.com) Charli XCX is pop music for people who think they don't like pop music. The 20-year-old British singer-songwriter has been riding on a critical and commercial high in 2013, those two sides complementing each other surprisingly well. While her debut album, True Romance, earned her cred from the tastemakers (including Pitchfork's coveted Best New Music title), her song "I Love It" has been a breakout Top 10 hit for Swedish duo Icona Pop. However, she sees a divide between her own work and the songs she pens for others. "When I write my songs, I always have like a visual connection with them," she recently told Radio.com. "Usually when I write a song, I'll see a music video, or at least an idea for a music video, and that's how I know I'm connected with it. "When I wrote 'I Love It,' [it] was a really quick process. I wrote it in a half an hour in a hotel room in Sweden. It was just me screaming into my laptop and that was it. But afterwards, I didn't really see anything, so I knew straightaway from the beginning that that song wasn't right for me, but I knew it was right for someone else." She continued: "It was cool when Aino and Caroline [of Icona Pop] came down to the studio and they heard it. It was funny, because the lyrics for them were really relevant at that point, because they were going through break-ups. It kind of found a home with them, whereas with me I was just kind of like, I don't know, I was just on some weird anger rush. After that, it was gone. But for them it really meant something, so it had to go to them. I'm glad it did, because they're really doing it some justice." Though XCX's own dark electropop isn't as overwhelmingly Top 40 in its appeal as "I Love It," she can be pure bubblegum in her tastes and influences, particularly when '90s pop nostalgia is involved. In other words, she doesn't believe in the concept of guilty pleasures. Check out the full interview.

(Radio.com) "I'm not making music for the radio." When an artist says this, it usually means they're going in a new artistic direction, like Kanye West, who railed against radio during his performance at Governors Ball, telling the crowd, "Honestly, when I listen to radio, that ain't where I wanna be no more." It was his way of explaining why he didn't release a radio single to promote Yeezus, but more importantly it stood for something big. He was saying, "I'm making something more than just pop music."Of course, after having his lowest first week sales ever with his latest album, he did end up sending his song, "Black Skinhead" to the airwaves. Whether Kanye's anti-radio screed was just his typical bluster, or whether he realized how many millions of people still tune in, saying you don't want to make music for the radio, could ultimately mean you won't be heard by a majority of America. But even with that disclaimer, Jay Sean is bold enough to say that his latest album, NEON, was not made with radio in mind. "It sounds like a crazy thing to say, 'I'm not making this for radio,' because if you don't make it for the radio and it doesn't get played no one will hear it, right?'" Sean said. "But what happens in songwriting is you're writing just so it becomes a hit. There's no heart in it. I have to write with heart." Sean explained to Radio.com that he doesn't even let other people say the words "hit" or "smash" while they're in the studio with him. He's afraid it will go to everyone's head and the magic the song once had will be lost. "When you listen to radio there's certain things you have to keep in mind," Sean explained. "It has to have tempo or you have to talk about this subject because people like to sing about this right now. Or asking, 'Can this song get played at five in the afternoon when people just finished work and they want to have fun?' And you start getting too scientific with it." more.
