Day in Pop Report for 08/23/2013
(Radio.com) In the early hours of Thursday morning (Aug. 22), a tour bus was pulled over on I-40 and Meridian in Oklahoma City, Okla. for a broken taillight. 2 Chainz and 10 associates were on board and refused to open the doors to the authorities, who suspected drug usage on the bus. After a standoff lasting approximately eight hours, 2 Chainz and co. were arrested for Obstruction of a Public Officer."We stopped the bus about midnight and it was near I-40 and Meridian," Oklahoma City Police Department Sergeant Jennifer Wardlow told Radio.com while the investigation was still underway. "The reason for traffic stop was it looks like there was a broken taillight. When officers went up to bus and made contact with the driver, there was evidence of drug usage going on the bus. We're not getting into specifics of what it was, but it was apparent to the officers that there was drug use going on the bus. The driver was taken into custody without any problem. When he got out and shut the door, it locked so the officers couldn't get into the tour bus. "The decision was made to tow the bus to our police training facility and obtain a warrant. It was about 8 a.m. Oklahoma time when they were able to get a warrant, and it was at that time that all the people who were on the bus came off." Update: Oklahoma City Police Department Sergeant Jennifer Wardlow sent out a statement regarding reports of narcotics being found on 2 Chainz's bus. "After speaking with investigators I learned that some narcotics were found. An investigation will be conducted to try to determine ownership. Charges could be filed at a later date," she said. And the arresting officer's name? Tom Jones.Schodack Police Lt. Joseph Belardo says Cassidy was stopped shortly after 12 a.m. Wednesday, about 10 miles south of Albany, N.Y. According to local newspaper the Times Union, he was released from the Rensselaer County Jail around 3 a.m. on $2,500 bail. According to the Times Union, Cassidy was pulled over because he didn't dim his headlights when approaching the arresting officer's patrol car. The rookie officer, named Tom Jones, reported that when he pulled the former teen idol over, Cassidy sang, "What's new, pussycat?" a reference to the other Tom Jones. Officer Jones was unfamiliar with his namesake (and also was unaware that Cassidy was a former celebrity) and didn't get the joke, but reported that Cassidy "was very polite and courteous and joking around despite the situation." more on this story

(Radio.com) The first time Jack Johnson met Ben Harper, Harper was singing one of Johnson's songs. Fifteen years and numerous collaborations later, the two still remain friends and worked together on one of the tracks off Johnson's forthcoming album, From Here to Now to You. In a new interview with Radio.com, Johnson recalled the very first time he met Harper and how they came to work together on the new song, "Change." "When I look back to the very first time we met, I heard him sing some of my lyrics when he was walking up behind me," Johnson told Radio.com. "I just couldn't believe that he would have listened to it enough that he could have memorized the melody and the words to one of my songs and how much that meant to me." Johnson said recording the song "Change" was "a real nice experience," and said he looked up to Harper and his music long before he even knew him."He came into the studio and recorded that song with us," Johnson recalled. "He really got into it and he sang along. He sang the harmony of the song and played some Weissenborn slide guitar. That was really neat, to think that we've known each other for almost 15 years now." more on this story

(Radio.com) After 27 years, Dolly Parton has decided it's time to finally expand Dollywood. "It's gonna be a big deal," the legendary singer said during an interview on the Today show Wednesday (August 21). "And I'm so excited
this has been a dream from the very beginning. It's got a Southern flair, but it's done very classy."Dollywood is located in the Smoky Mountains community of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, close to her birthplace in Sevier County. When the park first opened 1986, her financial advisers strongly discouraged her from investing in it, but Dolly disagreed. "I said, 'Well, I'm gonna do it anyway, because I know that it's the right thing to do in my gut,'" she explained. The expansion is estimated to cost $300 million and will take ten years, but it will also create thousands of new jobs for the community. Included in the expansion plans is a new 300-room resort, fittingly called DreamMore. It's scheduled to open in summer 2015, according to her website. It will include a spa, a swimming pool, porches to mingle, and shuttle services to and from the park, among other amenities. "They wanted to base [the resort] on what people perceive me to be, the country girl that's made good but still loves being home," Dolly told the Nashville Tennessean. "We definitely wanted to keep it with a down-home atmosphere, but we wanted it to have some class and some glamour
It is a lot of fun. It is the ultimate dollhouse Dolly's dollhouse." more on this story

(Radio.com) Lauren Alaina has come a long way since her American Idol days, collecting tips and tricks from tourmates and duet partners ranging from Jason Aldean to Martina McBride.Though she garnered country airplay with "Like My Mother Does," "Georgia Peaches" and "Eighteen Inches," Alaina's latest radio single sticks out in her mind: "Barefoot and Buckwild" is the first she's had a hand in writing. The experience was "exciting and scary and really awesome" and something Alaina aims to recreate on her forthcoming sophomore album. While in the midst of working on the follow-up to 2011′s Wildflower, Alaina sat down with Radio.com to discuss the songwriting process and give a taste of what's to come. While the 18-year-old will be writing the majority of the songs, this doesn't mean she won't consider outside songwriters. In the end, she asserts, "the best song wins." "I've learned so much about myself and my music from sitting in those rooms and creating different sounds," she said. "I write about what's on my mind. It's like a stress reliever. I didn't realize when I first started writing how much it would set me free from certain situations in my life. It's incredible." When she harbors feelings of heartbreak or sadness, Alaina puts it into a song and finds that her mind is eased, at least temporarily. "I was having a hard day, dealing with the fact that my grandfather has Alzheimer's and I wrote about it," she explained. "And then I wrote a song about my ex-boyfriend, who was terrible and the worst boyfriend I've ever had in my entire life, and I got a great song out of him so I can thank him for that." more on this story

Today up and coming pop and R&B star Just Ivy tells us about her debut song "Paradise," which features Akon and was produced by REO of The Soundkillers (Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Keyshia Cole). Here is the story: I wanted to my debut single to be a fun, up-beat party record. So, jumping off from that, I felt like the lyrics and theme should embody this breezy, summery, blissful vibe to it. I love the beach, the sea, surfing, exciting locations and secret getaways, and these were all elements that I wanted to incorporate into the record. So, when my team and I reviewed the song options we were working with, "Paradise," naturally stuck out as the perfect song. It has all of the happy, fun, sexy elements I was looking for. The next step was to identify a producer and a collaborator who would bring a modern party twist to the record. So, REO of the Soundkillers and legendary vocal producer and song writer Corey Gibson came through to work with me in the famed Quad Studio and it was magic. I immediately felt like This is the song! That's it! We have to write to it no matter what and make it a hit... Everything came together so fast. They knew exactly what to bring out of me to get a really pretty and danceable song to come to life. When my team and I were brainstorming over the right artist to feature on the hook and Akon's name came up, it was like, Stop everything!! This is THE ONE!!! So, we reached out to him, and miraculously, he was available to work with me and the rest was.....Paradise! Working with Akon was a blast! He just makes everyone feel good and he inspired me to be at my best. Thinking back on the pre-production and recording process, I couldn't have hoped for more incredible world-class hit-makers to work with on my first single. I am humbled and grateful..... Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself right here!
