Jack White Hit With Restraining Order From His Ex-Wife
(Radio.com) When rocker Jack White and his model/singer-songwriter wife Karen Elson broke up in 2011, it was so amicable that the couple threw a "divorce party," asking friends and family to help celebrate their split "with a positive swing bang hum dinger."

The situation has taken a far less agreeable turn, with Nashville's City Paper reporting that a judge has granted Elson a restraining order against White over a litany of accusations amidst a bitter custody battle over the couple's two children.

According to the restraining order issued on July 22, Jack White has been harassing his ex-wife and her lawyer "in an inappropriate and aggressive manner," including threatening phone calls and emails.

Among the allegations are that White wanted Elson to have their children removed from a particular class shared with the child of an entertainer he believes "ripped off his music." He was allegedly also upset with her for attending the wedding of another musician he feels has stolen his musical ideas, with the order making mention of the former White Stripes frontman's supposedly violent temper.

"This pattern of husband's bullying wife into submission was a contributing factor in the demise of their marriage," reads the restraining order, which forbids the musician from having "any contact with wife whatsoever except as it relates to parenting time with the parties' minor children." more.

Katy Perry Surges Past Lady Gaga
In the closest thing one can find to an online popularity contest, Katy Perry has surpassed Lady Gaga. Perry now has more followers on Twitter than Lady Gaga, making her the most-followed woman on the site and the second most-followed overall.

As of early Friday morning, Katy Perry had 40,150,336 followers and she is followed by Lady Gaga, who had 39,389,617 followers on the social networking site.

Perry will still have a little ways to go to top the most-followed person on Twitter, Justin Bieber, who had 42,491,906 followers as of early Friday morning.

Lady Gaga used to hold the overall Twitter follower crown but Bieber surpassed her in January of this year. Gaga really slowed down her activity on the social media site after that occurred, having only tweeted once between mid-February and early June, according to FMQB.

But things have changed drastically since Lady Gaga announced her new album and app, ARTPOP. In fact, she tweeted 13 separate times on Wednesday.

Perry will be releasing her new album, "Prism" on October 22nd and Lady Gaga's "ARTPOP" album will be released in November. Gaga says the much buzzed about ARTPOP app is "is in essence, an interactive jewel case".

Nelly Releases Video For 'Get Like Me' Featuring Nicki Minaj, Pharrell
(Radio.com) Nelly continues to heat up the summer with his new single "Get Like Me" and the St. Louis rapper just released the music video for the track, the lead single from his seventh studio album, M.O., due out later this year.

Directed by Colin Tilley, Nelly's smooth raps are heard over a distinct bongo beat. The black and white clip features Pharrell and Nicki Minaj who assist on the sultry track, both of who Nelly raves about in a behind-the-scenes clip.

"You know my history with Pharrell, we've always had great chemistry together," Nelly said. "This is my first time working with Nicki but she brings the energy, charisma and her star power and I think that's what the video is about. It's just about that star power, energy, and the hypeness of the joint."

Five sets were built for the video to provide a "fresh, slick set," Tilley explained.

"When we get together we like to make a song that evokes as much energy as possible, like a stimulant," Pharrell added.

Not unlike Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" (which also features Pharrell) and even Justin Timberlake's "Tunnel Vision," Nelly's video features scantily clad ladies dancing around and twerking. Nelly even uses their bodies as a drum for further effect. more on this story

Jay Sean Explains Why 'Neon' Isn't A Typical Cash Money Album
(Radio.com) It's been a long wait, but Jay Sean is finally releasing his new album 'Neon,' and he spoke all about it, how he's excited to show America a new side of himself, and more with the Diva Nikki Z.

UK rapper Jay Sean is not quite the stereotypical Cash Money artist, but part of that is based on the dual nature of Sean's fame, which is quite different in the USA and abroad. "I left my grills in the car," Sean joked with Nikki Z. "Of course I'm gonna be a bit un-stereotypical, but that's why they [Cash Money] signed me. They were like 'Man, this dude just does what he does, and he speaks in this funny accent.' To them, it's funnay as hell– they still don't know what I'm talking about half the time."

The label just released Sean's new album 'Neon,' an album packed with R&B jams quite different than what American fans may be used to from the party rapper, which Sean believes is more in line with his first UK-based albums, and the type of music that caught Cash Money's attention in the first place.

"I had my first record deal ten years ago in England. So I had a worldwide fan base, except I never had a deal in America," the rapper recalled. "So the rest of the world knew my music. They came across a video of mine called 'Ride It,' and it had crazy views. Of course, they're business minds, they're looking at this going 'How does he have so many views?' So we got in contact and they went 'Listen, we know you don't have a deal in America, let's put you out.' That's what happened."

Now, ten years later, Sean is set to release his latest project, 'Neon.' "I'm so looking forward to this, it's been a while in the making, but I got this right," he said of the long awaited album. "Neon is something different for America. If you know me as that guy who sings 'Down' and "Do you remember' and '2012,' the fun party guy– if that's what you know me as– then you're gonna be a little surprised when I switch it on you in this one." A lot more.

Snooki Opens Up To Extra About Weight Loss and More Baby Plans
(Extra) New mom Snooki is down 50 pounds after giving birth to baby Lorenzo, and now she's telling "Extra's" AJ Calloway how she did it. Snooki also dished on plans to go under the knife, and expand her family.

AJ hopped on a bike and joined Snooki for her favorite workout class; spinning at Flywheel Sports. Says Snooki, "Flywheel is like spin class, but on crack… you have to go quick and crazy and you just don't want to give up… sometimes when I do spin by myself I just give up, but in this class you just can't."

The "Jersey Shore" gal, who said she owes her slimmed-down figure to Flywheel and her trainer, went on to say she tries to exercise all of the time and that she is in the best shape of her life. "Now is the best I've ever been, I have actual muscle mass so I can kick your butt."

Snooki is fit and trim, but does want to do a little nip/tuck, admitting she wants to get her breasts done. Her fiancé is all for it. "Gionni wants me to get a boob job and I want to get a boob job too, but I want to pop out all my babies first and then I'll get a boob job."

Snooki says she is ready to give 1-year-old Lorenzo a sibling, but has a few things to get done first. "I would love to be pregnant now, but my house isn't done and I have to get married. I want to do it the right way for the next one."

Michael Franti Mixes In EDM On New Album
(Radio.com) Michael Franti's musical style has changed since his early days. No longer is he the spoken word troubadour with a guitar slung on his back. His latest album, All People, with his band Spearhead, continues in the same pop vein of his previous two releases, specifically 2009's All Rebel Rockers, which garnered him his first mainstream hit with "Say Hey (I Love You)." But even though Franti's gone pop he's still able to send a clear message. This time around he's just combined it with an EDM-style beat.

On the album's title track, "All People" Franti is celebrating the diversity and beauty in people all over the world over a twinkly electronic beat, while the synth-driven "11:59" is about being on the edge of some great change. "In life and in the world right now we're on this precipice for lots of issues," Franti said. "So the metaphor 11:59 is right at that stroke before midnight. What are we going to do? What is going to happen? What's the next step? What's the next thing?"

For those who feel Franti's new record is a big departure for the singer, he says that dance music has always been in his blood, citing Kraftwerk's 1977 album, Trans-Europa Express as one of the influences on All People.

"Ever since I was a little kid, I've always loved electronic music but I've never made electronic music," he said. "With this record I wanted to do it but in a way that was authentic to who I am, so I combined it with acoustic guitar." more on this story

Bon Iver Sideband Volcano Choir Release Album Documentary
(Radio.com) A new 10-minute documentary takes fans inside the studio with Bon Iver mastermind Justin Vernon's other band, Volcano Choir, as they record their new album, Repave.

For the band's second record–due out Sept. 3–they decided to take a more direct approach in comparison, unlike their 2009 debut, Unmap, which had Vernon and fellow Wisconsin indie rockers Collections of Colonies of Bees teaming up mostly by accident. "We were all friends trading things back and forth and seeing what weird stuff we could come up," the band explains.

In the doc, which features gorgeous footage of Wisconsin (yes, Vernon has returned to the woods), the band talks about touring Japan and becoming a real band, teasing a bit of new music in the process.

Volcano Choir recently released the album's first single, "Byegone" and announced that they'll be hitting the road for a handful of dates this fall, kicking things off on Sept. 6 in Chicago. Watch the documentary here.

JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound Take Soul In A New Direction
(Radio.com) They may be fans of artists like Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding, and have more than a few Stax songs in their music collections, but don't call JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound a "soul" band and leave it at that.

If you need proof, just give a listen to the Chicago band's new album Howl. Released earlier this summer, Howl is the band's third album, and there's nothing "retro" about it.

It's true, however, that classic soul has been the group's chief identity since they first formed (via a Craigslist ad placed by guitarist Billy Bungeroth) in 2007. At that point, the young bandmates (Brooks, Bungeroth, drummer Kevin Marks, and bassist Ben Taylor–keyboardist Andy Rosenstein joined later) were eager to explore the genre, and they wound up creating two solid albums that dug in deep, starting with 2009′s Beat Of Our Own Drum. Continuing their journey down the soul music pathway, they also landed a prestigious gig as part of the Numero Group's "Eccentric Soul Revue," where they backed vintage soul artists like Syl Johnson and Renaldo Domino. The Revue earned them a good deal more positive press, and they took that musical experience with them into the studio when they cut their second album, 2011′s Want More.

This year, though, the members of JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound have shifted gears. While not abandoning the soul sound that built their reputation, their new album Howl takes that sound, shakes it out a bit, and guides it new directions. It's still music you can dance to–which was one of the 'mission statements' when the band first formed–but sonically it's more jagged around the edges, and a good deal more complex.

As lead singer JC Brooks explained to Radio.com in a recent interview, the Numero Group experience and their album Want More had "established that we can do classic soul well. But none of us wanted to be stuck there, because we all like so many different things." Gang of Four, the Clash, Steely Dan, and Tom Waits, for instance, were all names that got a rise out of Brooks during the interview. "If we did another album that sounded so classic soul," he said, "it would be like a point of no return thing."

And so they took a hard left turn and went looking for something new. The result is Howl, an album that mixes the vintage soul sound of their recent past with additional elements including driving rock rhythms, new wave-inspired dance grooves, and walls of fuzzy guitar. It's a sound that's fresh and exciting, yet it's still as down-to-earth and, well, 'soulful' as anything they've released to date.

As Brooks explains it, there wasn't one experience he can pinpoint that led to the songs and the new sound on the band's third album Howl. Rather, it was a number of factors that led the bandmates to the realization that, if they wanted to veer off in new directions, the time was now. He said the experience was freeing for them, as they realized, "We don't have to make happy music, we don't have to make soul music."

"A lot of this stuff [on Howl] is pretty dark," Brooks continued, "where Want More is kind of a party album." They realized this as they were preparing for the recording session, but they were OK with this new direction and decided to roll with it. More.
