Day in Pop Report for 02/16/2012
Adele addresses her sweep of the Grammy Awards and speculation that she is planning to take a five year break from music. In fact, she tells fans she is heading back into the recording studio. The hiatus speculation came from media reports where a quote from a profile in Vogue magazine was taken out of context to read that she was planning to take "four or five years" off. The actual quote was her response when asked about her plans to settle down and start a family. The actual profile read ....One day, I ask about her future. "I am f***ing off for four or five years," she says. "If I am constantly working, my relationships fail. So at least now I can have enough time to write a happy record. And be in love and be happy. And then I don't know what I'll do. Get married. Have some kids. Plant a nice vegetable patch." Adele addressed the reports in an indirect way in a blog entry where we learn that she is not taking time off, but is planning to return to the recording studio. She wrote: Oh goodness!! I'm absoloutly flabbergasted! In between laughing my head off, welling up, needing to sit down and trying to maintain an open fire (which is pretty much impossible huh!?) I keep having flashbacks to Sunday night. The most incredible night of my life. Thank you to you all, I am so overwhelmed, it's the strangest feeling. I have constant butterflies and goosebumps, it's wearing me out but I LOVE it! I've been sleeping a lot but the minute I wake up I burst out laughing and it starts all over again. I forgot to mention so many people by name on the night, and for that I'm sorry. I will say thanks to your face when I next see you. I was totally unprepared. Despite the phenomenal year, I swear I didn't think I had any chance. All the categories were full of people I adore with brilliant songs, records and performances. So not in my wildest dreams did I think to actually prepare anything proper to say just in case. Thank you to everyone who enjoys my music, and to all the "daydreamers" (i love that you call yourselves that. I read all your messages and threads from time to time and you crack me up x) it seems like you pass 21 on and want people to hear it and it's because of that that it's evolved into something that we should all be very proud of. All of this is yours the songs, the shows, the moments like this. Not that there's any other moments like this one, but you get my drift
. Ha! The night itself was so amazing, I met so many incredible people and everyone we've lost this year were on our minds and in our hearts and it was lovely to remember them all together as fans and friends. I've a few days off now, and then it's the Brit Awards here at home and then I'm straight into the studio. BOYYAHH! 5 years? More like 5 days! (her blog post)

Keith Urban's new song in the Navy Seal action-thriller Act of Valor is a first for the country star. Urban's "For You," co-written by Urban and Monty Powell, marks the first time that Urban has written and recorded a song specifically for a motion picture, and it will be featured during the film's end credits. "I loved the challenge of writing for a film," said Urban. "I've never done that before. After seeing Act Of Valor, my co-writer (Monty Powell) and I wanted to capture the essence of not only what these men and women do so extraordinarily, but how that relates to all of us. 'Valor' shows us what they are willing to give their all for, which made me wonder, 'what am I willing to give my life for?' 'For You' is intended to allow the listener to define who that is for them." "For You" was co-produced by Dan Huff and Urban and was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee at Starstruck Studios. The song was engineered by Mark Dobson and Todd Tidwell, mixed by Mike Shipley at Animal House, and mastered by Brent Blackwood at Euphonic Masters. Grab a listen here.

Real Gone Music has set a March 27, 2012 release date for its March 2012 releases featuring B.J. Thomas' The Complete Scepter Singles, Frankie Avalon's Muscle Beach Party: The United Artists Sessions, The Tubes' Young & Rich/Now, Rick Springfield's Beginnings, David Axelrod's Messiah, Wishbone Ash's Live Dates II and Clint Eastwood's Rawhide's Clint Eastwood Sings Cowboy Favorites. From his 1966 recording of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" through his 1972 double-sided hit single "That's What Friends Are For"/"Happier Than the Morning Sun," B.J. Thomas enjoyed a string of hits rivaled by few artists of that time. And the fact that he did this on an indie label, Scepter, makes the achievement even more impressive. Various compilations of Thomas' Scepter sides have come and gone. But Real Gone's 44-track anthology is the first to offer A- and B-sides of every one of the artists' Scepter singles, including his 19 hits. Many of the B-sides never appeared on albums. DJ/journalist Michael Ragogna wrote the notes, which feature quotes from Thomas. Frankie Avalon's late '50s/early '60s recordings practically define an era in pop music. But while there have been many reissues of his legendary Chancellor recordings, his later output has proven elusive. Frankie Avalon: Muscle Beach Party: The United Artists Sessions features 20 stereo tracks recorded in 1964 and '65. The set's centerpiece is Frankie's album Muscle Beach Party and Other Movie Songs, which features music from his films (notably a version of "Runnin' Wild," his spotlight solo in the Muscle Beach Party movie). In addition are his rare UA singles plus tracks from the soundtrack of I'll Take Sweden, a Bob Hope comedy in which he co-starred. The set features liners by Tom Pickles and photos. more on this story

River City Extension have set a June 5th release date for their sophomore album, "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Your Anger." The band recorded the 14-track album with producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, Josh Ritter, Secret Machines, Gomez) at Engine Studios in Chicago. The lyrically ambitious, stylistically adventurous "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Your Anger" confronts thorny issues of personal and spiritual struggle in a manner that's both intimate and illuminating; songwriter and frontman Joe Michelini describes it as an album about resolution and forgiveness. "For the most part, these songs represent a dark period in my life when I really didn't like myself," he explains. "I was still young and still learning, and a lot of people were probably hurt by the person I was at the time. Half of this record is love songs, and half is 'I'm sorry that I f**ked up' songs -- I look at them as a stepping stone, a way to put some distance between myself and that part of my life, and to remind myself that I've chosen to do better." more on this story
