Sev – all these dreams
Review by Scott Slapp

Sev – all these dreams
Label: Geffen
Rating:

Nu metal has finally come crashing into a brick wall. This album is evidence that the rap-metal craze has finally reached the point of no return, just asking for something to come along and kick it into the recycle bin of history.

First off, I have to say from a purely commercial standpoint this CD has it’s merits, it’s produced to the point that the songs come off as targeted and focused on radio play and sales as a boyband. The songs have the same commercial appeal as your run of the mill pop group and therein lies the problem. If you listen to this album as a rock purist, it’s bound to piss you off. It’s just too slick to be produced to be taken seriously. But then again the kids who don’t know any better this is a natural and in the end it may help put the final nail in the coffin of nu metal.

If you watch TV then you may recognize this band from the “Pepsi Blue” commercial. If they annoyed you there, the rest of the CD will send you into spazisms. If you liked the hooky track than the good news is the rest of this CD has more than enough for you to love.

The biggest problem is this CD is about two years too late. If it had been released in 2000 or 2001 it would have been a smash hit. It’s far better than anything Limp Bizkit ever produced but’s not saying much. If anything if they replaced the rapping with straight vocals I would actually give props to these guys but as it stands it’s just another slick over produced rap-rock CD that brings absolutely nothing new to the table.

Verdict? Fans of rap-rock and Linkin Park will more than likely love this CD. If you aren’t a fan of that style, then avoid this album like the plague and wait for the debut from Depswa, a new band coming from Geffen that I personally have a lot easier time taking seriously. As it stands this CD gives us a great insight into why CD sales are plummeting. It’s not illegal mp3’s, it’s the tendency of labels to released varied versions of the “same ol’ thing”. . Sev is to rap-rock what Tuff was to hairmetal.

still crap

their producer ****ed things up. the original versions of the songs, literally 2-3 years earlier were much better and radio friendly, yet still could be called rock and not pop. surely disappointed that the local boys didn't make it big, HFStival 2000 sure did like them though.

Posted by They sucked then, they suck now:
i knew them from fairfax, have played with some of them in past bands and that's exactly why i dislike their crap. i remember when i first listened to it and asked my friend why he was in this type of band. seriously, he was a smart and talented musician and he just shrugged. two white guys from fairfax rapping...brilliant. and the pepsi blue commercial - enough said.

ok, so im biased because i knew all of them before they were a band... however, i am a metal fan, and i still see merit in sev;s music. first of all, they do have a bunch of crap in their reportie, ie same old song (the pepsi blue commercial). the cd and the songs on it were produced at the bedhedst of the label, WHICH AT THE TIME WAS HEADED BY DURST. so if you thought that they were a more poppy version of bizkit, well gee, buy a freggin clue genious. as far as hfstival, yeah, they didn't put on a great show, BECAUSE THEIR LINEUP WAS AGAIN ENGINEERED BY THE LABEL, i.e. Matt Pinfield along with, who else, his buddy Durst, the owner of the label. See a show at a local bar and you'll change your mind. Or at least know more about them than one freggin album...

This is one of the best emo albums I have ever purchased.

the sev cd sucks. i bought it over the weekend because i liked the pepsi blue song and the entire album sucks they sound like fred durst with more energy

Posted by angel:
Until I went to my first show I did not think anything of them. Now I am a fan. They have so much energy and are so grateful for their fans. Go Sev!

Posted by Fred Durst:
I hate these bands that have chicks singers. They all sound alike. If it wasn't for Limp Bizkit, ....if it wasn't for....if it wasn't....damn it, this band sucks!

Posted by GREENMUSE:
the guys on the pepsi blue commercial were a real band!?!i thought they were just made to look that way.the commercial annoyed me greatly.

Yes,nu-metal is dead, for crying out loud. The only place this would have any real air play is the Midwest!!That place is what Mark Twain said about KY.Now all I'm waiting for is this indie thing (though I kinda like,I'm not going to deny the inevitable)becomes "nu-alternative" or corporatised.

How about THAT! More rap that is disguised as Rock, in a fruitless attempt to trick people. What a weak ruse. NEWSFLASH : Those that fell for the whole "Rap Metal" thing, have already opened their wallets as far as they can be opened. Nobody new is going to board a sinking ship. If one hasn't fallen for this straight-corporate scam yet, they never will---and if your one of those persons, I commend you.

Saw these guys at HFstival and Pop Sucks Tour (they apparently filled in for TrustCompany, who even though I dislike, probably would have been a better act to see). Didn't think much of them at either concert.
