Serart is the story of one nu metal band’s
frontman’s embrace of world music, proving once again that, apparently,
System of a Down’s Serj Tankian is the new Joe Strummer. Combining what
feels like a mess of styles ranging from African tribal beats to the music
of the Far, Near, and Middle East to some easier-to-recognize drum and
bass loops, Tankian teams with fellow Armenian musician Arto Tuncboyaciyan
(No, I will not pronounce that for you) on this anything-but-mainstream
vanity project.
Serart, billed as a team effort, is largely
Tuncboyaciyan’s (It’s even hard to spell) show. Tankian puts his two spoken-word
cents in every now and again, but it’s more a study in international instrumental
jams. For System fans, it is important to note that Tuncboyaciyan (No,
really, it’s frustrating how slow I have to type this) provided the woodwind
solo that succeeded “Aerials” at the end of 2001’s Toxicity.
As for contemporary sounds, every once
in a while a scratched turntable or sampling does appear, but not so as
to interfere with the string of ethereal bongo and woodwind solos that
sometimes spill over into multiple tracks, especially in the beginning.
And of course, there is the political bent.
“Love Is the Peace” opens up with the sounds of wartime gunfire, followed
by some delightful Armenian chanting. “Leave Melody Counting Fear” gives
Tankian the chance to sing his politics instead of scream them over Tuncboyaciyan’s
(grrr…) Spanish guitar, while “Claustrophobia” is Tankian’s spoken word
plea for peace/philosophy lesson.
VERDICT: When most people say “Oh, I like
all kinds of music,” they tend to only mean top 40, rock, hip-hop, and
80’s music, and if they’re feeling crazy, maybe country. If Serart does
nothing, it certainly broadens the listener’s musical horizons with its
Eastern-centric music. The Western beats make it more palatable, but not
to the point where the album’s intent feels diluted. This is a good album
to borrow from or give to your new age-y alt-rock friend.

they ask the listeners "y do we not see the lies?", and the outcome is rage, joy, from taking the vail of stories from their eyes, and sometimes a few tears from mom.
i say yippie! to the systems truthful lyrics, the loud bass (as a bass player, i am very happy that u can actually HEAR shavo), the ****ed guitars, the outrageously good drumming, and the strong vocals. u kick fatty!

What do you mean? fantasizing exactly about what? Any way, I don't think they're obsessed. Maybe a few. But they're just into what SOAD is about. Its not like our whole lives are revolved around them. And i dont mean to sound like a cock, but in SOAD's lyrics, there mostly is nothing to decipher. Its left open for interpretation. A lot of stuff they sing about is personal, so how the hell would we know exactly what they are talking about? Of course the political stuff we could easily understand for the most part. Go ahead and admire Serj in moderation or whatever, but I'm sure that they are all aware that what ever fantasies they have IF ANY are not coming true. I don't love Serj. Or Shavo or Daron or John for that matter. I am just into their causes. thats all. Thank you.

Back on topic, Serj is totally awesome, but... I'm thinking you guys might be just a bit obsessed. HI Flow. On Axis of Justice, Serj says his name two different ways that I have heard of, but I think he says it the other way just to be funny, but yeah, it is Serj as in Serj.. He isn't directly from Armenia. He, Shavo, John and Daron all grew up in the LA area, but thay are of Armenian descent and have family from there I think.Last I read, they're all still living around the LA area. You should check out Axis Of Justice.Its cool. It is on 90.7 fm on every other Friday. You can go onto axisofjustice.com and check the times. Hope you like it! And to YUKI, I really liked your comment.And you should definitely check out Serart!! Its a collaberation between Serj, and an Armenian folk artist. Well, I've heard a lot about Serart, but I've never quite listened to them, although I'm DYING to check it out. I've read a few sample poems out of Cool Gardens, and I WANT THAT BOOK. I admit Mr. Tankian is a bit dirty, but then again, so was Shakespeare. That's my reasoning, anyway. ^_^ I'm a HUGE SOAD fan, and I love Mr. Tankian's voice. His messages in the lyrics are very powerful, but I think the music hits me a lot harder. Mr. or Ms.Krag Shukov, if you don't like Mr. Tankian, why are you on this site? I could understand why you don't like his lyrics, especially if you don't agree with his messages, but listen a little closer to his music, and you might find that you like it. I didn't like it at first, either, but I started appreciating it more as I grew older. Some of the issues in Tankian's songs, like Science, I don't agree with-I believe science plays a part in Mother Earth to some extent-but I still appreciate his thoughts and I LOVE the music. Think of it that way, and perhaps you might find you have a different opinion in Serj Tankian. And, er, isn't it a little MEAN to say you wish the Turks killed all the Armenians? We're talking genocide, here! It's not a very light matter. Oh, and Ms. Shay Tankian, you are VERY lucky to have the same last name as Serj! I turn green with envy!^_^

Serj is truly an inspirational person. System Of A Down is a truly inspiratonal band. It's not just about the way they sound... it's about the messages that are put across through the sound. Serj, you are just the most beautiful singer in the world. I am so happy that I stumbled across your music. Now I can't go to sleep without listening to a System Of A Down song. I always thought after hearing Science that Serj's melodic voice would sound freakin awesome to a middle eastern type beat. Or a nice beat other than a thrashing guitar. In Serart, you see that. And its freakin great! My favorite is Narina and Love is peace melody (or something like that)

i think that SOAD and serart are beautiful. i am armenian and i have the same last name as serj which i think is awesome! i woulde love to talk to him about armenia because there are not that many armenians in this country. if anyone has an address that i can contanct him at that would be wonderful. SOAD rules. serj is the greatest poet of all time in fact so is daron and shavo and john beause i am pretty sure that more than one person is writing those amazing songs. i am in love wit serj and it not just some little girl crush in fact im 25 not a little girl. i loved him ever since i first heard him sing and it hurts so much to know that i can't spend the rest of my life with him. i used to feel like no one would understand the way i feel then i found this site. there is more than just one person here who shares my feelings for serj.

I really like Serart. Totally different from what I was expecting, but it was great. You can tell they really clicked with their musical styles and managed to hammer out the entire album in 6 days. I hope they do something together again soon.

What's most inspiring about Serj is his passion for his art and music. Another admirable quality is his highly unique style behind the mike. Even though I would describe myself as a political conservative, these are the reasons why I am a fan of Serj and his band, SOAD. I happen to disagree with his political leanings, but it's his passion, energy, creativity, and drive that will keep me listening to his music and reading his literature, such as his book of poetry, "Cool Gardens," and "Understanding Oil." I only hope to accomplish 1/20th of what Serj has accomplished in his mere 37 years or so of existence. Thank you, Serj. You are an inspiration.

I think Serj, John, Shavo and Daron are incredible artist that edify their fans and also entertain with their superb talent and unique musical style. I think that "Compassion" in Cool Gardens is expressive of Serjs' personality that is found in his eyes.

Wow. Just wow. I couldn't even THINK the first time I listened to this album in the fall of 2003. I listen to a wide variety of music - - death metal, black metal, goth, industrial, (I admit it) a little country, classical, bhangra, chillout, Celtic, bellydance, medieval re-creations, folk, jazz, lounge. You name it, I've probably listened to it and played it on the radio. But I have NEVER heard anything like Serart. It's not even fusion; it's just natural. Serj Tankian is a GREAT person, what he does is great. I have read his poems, Serj is a great poet.He is a genious...I don't find any words to tell, how much I love him :)

System of a Down is my favorite band, not because i like rock, but because they have a meaning. So many new bands emerging today sound the same as other bands out there. The sound of system of a down is unique, and different. Serj puts out a message to everyone. He is a great person, in my words i would call him... a genious. He is changing the world positivly with Axis of Justice. System of a Down already has 3 great albums, one of which was a great seller, Toxicity. Theyre music sends chills down my spine. I visited Serjicalstrikerecords.com and i saw the trailer for his labels. I came to see Serart, an Armenian, Middle eastern sounding group. I saw that serj tankian as in it, so i visited Serart.net, and downloaded their Mixdown. I was in love with the music, it is just great. Its very unique, different instrument. Serj tankian and Arto create a great vipe and sound that i sit in awe. I wish that i could work with Serj Tankian and his band, it is a dream :D. I cant wait for SOAD's next album, they are a great band. I am inspired by theyre music. Serj, you are a great man, continue what you do, making great music live long.

serj's poetry is so beautiful. im amazed everytime i hear a new song from him. this is the kind of music that ive been waitin for from him, not that i dont like SOAD or anything. SOAD is the only heavy stuff i can listen to anymore. anyway, serj keep up the beautiful poetry and continue to inspire young minds like myself. you have taught me so much; mentally, spiritually, and politically. peace.

Serj rocks. SOAD is a very progressive band. they have come out with three killer albums and and continue to rock. serj is more or less the spokemen of thier philosophy. he is a very smart dude, olitically and philosophically. he has opened the doors for a new genre. keep it up serj you rock.

The album is great, it's somthing you can just chill out too when feeling mellow, mashed or just normal, it helps you unwind. Just slap it on from track one and just play a bit MarioKart double dash with a bunch of friends, stoned or not but I found it sounds better when you are :P, and a nice hot cup of tea, or coffee, each to their own eh?!

System has to be some of the best rock ever made. well of its time anyway.and that is not implying that it is new rock. htey did a good job on "toxicity" and i am sure that their next new album will be great too! you have to admit that malakian and tankian have some pretty good writing abilities. there lyrics actually have some value towards it and deep within their music they really know what they are talking about. dont rip system dudes, their music rox the world and i would like to see someone else come up with lyrics and music at their levil of originality. at this point and time no one is making music like them and it is good that they can be different right now at this time of desperation where the music that we listen to has no value what soever. I defend System of a down, I love their politics in their music. I think the wonderful blends of sounds is great, but I think more songs out of the regular sounds of the guitar and other "Metal" stuff would be interesting. They should try jazz. Haha!
Another thing is, I disagree with the term "vanity project." Admitted, one must be somewhat full of themselves to call anything serart, but I do believe the same Serj said that art is not ours, but of the universe. It's hard to consider yourself original at this point in time unless you manipulate the molecule code, but that's beyond the lot of you! hahaha..
Anyways, My point is, This dude seems to actually think. Whether politically, or emotionally, he could be a genius, Really. Avante garde is a good term for people like these.

I went out and bought this for my brother and being an existing soad fan i didn't hesistate to go to a music store out of town and pay double for shipping and handeling for serart. Serj tankian's voice is one that i loved from the time i heard sugar and still love feeling his grace in Mr. jack. Devil's Wedding is a song that you blast in a room and just shut up and feel it...So bloody awesome! By the way ladies let's not fued over serj....there is enough of this handsome creature to go around..wink wink....
