When you hear the word supergroup, many names come to mind: the Traveling Wilburies, Temple of the Dog, Damn Yankees. All these bands have one thing in common; they release one overhyped album and then quickly fade away (or Roy Orbison dies, in the case of the Wilburies). That being said, Audioslave is the first supergroup since Temple of the Dog to… feature Chris Cornell. The former Soundgarden frontman returns to the radar after a three year hiatus and a barely noticed but ridiculously under appreciated solo album (1999’s Euphoria Morning). This time, Cornell’s brought friends, or at least high profile bandmates, in the form of the three non-Zach de la Rocha-members of Rage Against the Machine, in an attempt to form the ultimate 90’s rock revival coup.

So let’s do the math here: Cornell’s howlin’ soul vocals, plus Tom Morello’s guitar-as-turntable art, plus Tim Commerford’s set-destroying antics, plus Brad Wilk’s… eerily well flat-ironed hair equals… Soundgarden 2: Even Louder than Love.

The truth is, the punch in the face that is “Cochise,” the lead track/single off Audioslave’s debut, is a bit misleading. What “Cochise” would lead you to believe is that Audioslave will feature Cornell screaming like it’s 1991 and that Morello will still be using his guitar as everything but a guitar non-stop for fourteen tracks. Not entirely. With the exception of a few songs, namely “Cochise,” “Like a Stone,” “Set It Off” and “Bring ‘em Back Alive,” Morello tends to downplay his legendary skills. In fact, there are quite a few songs, such as “Show Me How to Live” and “Shadow on the Sun,” wherein Morello, Commerford and Wilk sound much more like Thayil, Shepard and Cameron.

Even scarier, “Like a Stone” and “I am the Highway” contain moments where the band appears to be drifting off toward the middle of the road, with mellow acoustic strumming and mid-vocal range white man soul that we all know Cornell is better than.

However, all is forgiven on “Set It Off,” which, much like “Cochise,” still captures the spirit of the original bands, with Morello’s video-game wa-wa pedal fading out to reveal a low-voiced Cornell growl. Then there are surprises like “Explode,” where Cornell closes out the song with a scat routine that appears to reveal some secret love of Aerosmith. Meanwhile, the album’s blusiest track, “Getaway Car,” seems like a watered-down leftover from Cornell’s solo album, while “The Last Remaining Light” most reflects Cornell’s post-Garden/pre-slave sound.

VERDICT: It’s hard to think of Audioslave without examining the body of work that led up to its inception, albums like Superunkown and Evil Empire that helped form the soundscape of 90’s rock. It’s good to hear new work both from Cornell and Morello, and while the comparisons to Rage and Soundgarden will be made, and the band will most likely fizzle out from its own hype, there are some great moments on this album, like there were on the Temple of the Dog and Mad Season (another supergrunge group) albums. “Cochise” is one of the most legitimately hard-rocking songs on the radio right now, and what follows it is not a disappointment by any means, it’s just different for the parties involved.

Audioslave is a great band, unlike RATM b/c that zack's stupid voice does not belong in rock, it belongs in RAP, which isnt real music.

Posted by nik:
and Vassily Korpshok Zaitsev you stupid piece of white trash. let it go bitch, rage are gone, quit crying like a little girl. you sound like your dodo family left you behind.

Posted by orangecast:
well, rage was a great bad. wonderfully imaginative, powerful, full of character and they had a purpose. audioslave are a completely different band. sure they have character and are very imaginative but the don't seem to have a purpose. which is ok. rage was more of a che break off and audioslave seems to be more 'musically' inclined.

cornell should go **** himself

Posted by ratmfan:
Audioslave sucks ass, the only thing that makes it sound any good, is tom morello. Cornell sings like he has a stick up his ass. Rage all the way

Posted by RageBabie:
I think that RATM is my favorite band of all time. and I think that audioslave is waisting the GOOD tallent of music by tom, brad and tim. there NOTHING compaired to rage against the machine. because liek some of you said. Zack de la roche made it awesome by his fantastic lyrics and political strength. they are huge revolutionaries!

Posted by soulslicer:
I THINK AUDIOSLAVE SUX BIG TIME. THEIR SONGS ARE ASS. THEY LOOK LIKE ASSES. AND I THINK THEIR ALBUMS ARE SERIOUSLY CALLED "AL ---- BUMS" ITS JUST FULL OF BUTT THEIR MUSIC I THINK. **** U AUDIOSLAVE. **** U 4EVER

Audioslave sucks a** cause of cornell for being a pu**y Zack de la Roche is way better cause he way more hardcore and more political so adioslave sucks f**king b***s

RAGE KICks A**

THis is Ratm Society

Not pussy Cornell

Posted by unionforever:
i think audio slave ****ing sucks, cornell is too afraid to be ****ing political which is what made rage what they were, and they rocked, inspiring a desire for justice in the youth of the mid 90's, conclusion audioslave sucks, RAGE ****ING ROCKS

Posted by Jrock:
I think the review was a fair one. My only question for the reviewer is this: After letting the initial shock of the "Supergroup" persona has your review changed at all? I intially would have given a 3 star but after a year or two of growth I have completely come to appreciate this album in the wake of all the other crap albums that have made their way into rock radio.

I'll think blur is a stupid d*ckhead who can't spell. Audioslave sucks penis you sh*tbrain!! Rage Against the Machine f**king rules!!

Posted by blur:
i think u r chattin sh*t audio slave r a great band and have talent and shut it ste bishop d12 suck co*k

Posted by Miko Mido:
Oh yeah, I also like Soundgarden, but putting Cornell's voice with Rage's sound sounds like crap. It's like mixing chicken teryaki with snowboarding. Zach de la Rocha may have been crazy, but he's far superior to that once great but now mediocre and pompous singer Chris Cornell. "Cochise," "I am the Highway," and "Like a Stone" make me so angry it makes me cry. This band is very predictable, it's just watered-down Rage songs dubbed over with Cornell's voice. Tom Morello plays it safe with a soft rock ballad and instead of using cool "Rage" solos, he uses weak and bland ones, like in "Like a Stone" and "I am the Highway." Timmy C's bass plods aimlessly along, and Brad Wilk doesn't use his R&B drum beats anymore (very disappointing). I hope some p1ssed off Rage fan attacks this band and silences them once and for all!! Death to Audioslave and Nick!!

Posted by Miko Mido:
I live in Japan and I'm basically surrounded by that diareah called J-pop (Japanese pop). Just because I'm an 18 year old girl, that doesn't mean I like it, I like hard rock. Bands like Deep Purple and Rage Against the Machine were a huge refreshment from them, and Rage is one of my favorites. So Nick, Rage Against the Machine puts out "propaganda" instead of songs? What the f*ck do you call Audioslave's crap? Audioslave has -1000 times the potential of Rage, which was a really awesome band. Like J-pop, Audioslave appeals to female teeny-boppers. Anyone who thinks Audioslave is better or has more potential than Rage should jump off a cliff. Nick should be cut to pieces by ninjas. Unlike you yuppies, I'm sticking with that crazy Soviet guy Krag Zhukov.

No, you're the queen of American stupidity.

Posted by Fag Suckoff:
Well said. I am the queen of comedy.

Posted by Krag Zhukov:
Fag Suckoff, you're f*cking gay, just like Audiogay!! DIE FAG DIE!!!!

Posted by Fag Suckoff:
Yes, I'm very funny - so much so that I have to explain my wonderfully imaginative mock-names for bands I despise. Also, calling things gay is really funny. See my new name and laugh with me.

Posted by Krag Zhukov:
Just in case if you don't know, Syndrome of a Clown is my insult for SOAD. If you don't like my angry comments against Audiogay and Syncrome, my email is spongebobhater1017@lycos.com. Email my b1tches!!

Posted by Krag Zhukov:
Audioslave is f*cking gay!! I'm a huge fan of Rage Against the Machine and a fan of Soundgarden, but putting the two together doesn't work!! If you listen to Set it Off and Guerilla Radio, you'll notice that the instrumentation is almost exactly the same but with different lyrics. The same can be said about nearly the rest of the album. Now, the songs that aren't recycled Rage songs are too soft and radio-friendly. An example is Like a Stone. God I hate that song!! The guitar solos are awesome but it's not enough to save Audiogay from mediocrity. Cornell should be kidnapped, Zach should be forced back into the band, and RATM will be reborn. So, the only options of music besides Audiogay is ska crap like Blink 182 and Yellowcard? Why not listen to old stuff you dimwits!! Didn't that thought ever occur to your empty heads?!! Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath aren't just on vinyl, they're also on CDs, so get them!! Pick up some Tool and Rage while you're at it!! F*ck Audiogay and f*ck Syndrome of a Clown!!

I WOULDN'T LIE TO YOU IN THE UK I SAW THE ALBUM I BROUGHT IT AND I WAS IMPRESSED AND THATS THE BOTTOM LINE

Posted by Mofo:
Pick up the guitar on the next album Chris damnit!!!! ur too good of a guitarist and melodist to not have this band take advantage of it.....write some more of the songs musically..... P.S. Chris is starting to lose his voice a bit, but thats ok......i can still appreciate that he is still one of the best singers out there, and in his Temple of the Dog prime, no one could touch him.....

Posted by audioslave rocks:
chris cornell has the greatest voice ever. or damn near to it. with some hard rage stuff behind... it rocks totally

Posted by Nick:
MadPig14, it's good they don't go off the freaking deep end like de la Rocha did. Listening to a record full of propaganda instead of songs makes anyone who actually has a brain wanna kill himself. Also, it's pretty silly for guys who make as much as these dudes to sing about radicalism. These songs have 1000 times more feeling and are 1000 times better to listen to than any of RATM's ever were

I love Chris Cornell's voice but for the life of me I can't listen to Audioslave without feeling like he's stabbing me in the head. The vocals and the music just don't gel; it's like they've tried to staple together two entirely different sounds without ever playing it back

this album rocks rite up to the lowest part of me. ill never listen to any other cd longer than this one.

Audioslave is rocks last hope. If you don't want nothing but sh*tty a$$ rap on the radio, buy audioslaves cd. It' f*cking awesome. Queens of The Stone Age are also great. And for all you who think they should sing about politics, hey, Chris Cornell isn't that type of singer. This is rock, pure and great.

Posted by Briony:
As music is a form of creative expression,It's true value can only be defined by those who shape it, While everything else becomes an after-thought. Chris, Tom,Tim and Brad have defined themselves by what they believe- Not what others would have them believe. The merging of true talent and the birth of Audioslave only proves the old adage.... "Do what you love and the rest will follow". ROCK ON GUYS. - (NEW ZEALAND MOON CHILD)

Posted by me:
i yhink it is time for everyone to get over the bands they used to be because that isn't who they are anymore. change is a good thing and i love what they are doing now

Posted by MadPig14:
I would have to say that audioslave is the newest source of political activism potential. While the songs on the first disk do not pertain to corruption in the government as Rage Against the Machine trumpeted, I feel that the stylistic sounds appeal to a more politically aware audience. I love my rage, but I was only in middle school when they came out big, and I just liked them for their angry sound. Now, I have greater appreciation for them because of what they sang about. I feel that audioslave has the vocal and acoustic potential to express the band members politically potent views on a grander scale, and I truly hope they do.

Posted by ~*Kristy*~:
Audioslave is definitely the best thing around on todays music scene. Combining the sheer musical talent of Tom, Tim and Brad with Chris's amazing vocal talent can only lead to one thing- exceptional music. They'll be around for a long time - I cannot wait for the next albumn! Plus Chris is soooooooooo lush! great body, great face, great voice! what more could you want!

"Things like rebellion and resistance to authority are absolutely as much a part of the human experiment as love and cars are, and it's a part that doesn't get covered in very much pop music." -Tom Morello

i have followed chris cornell since the begining. I am also a singer/songwriter and this man is the most talented vocalist since robert plant. it is more than his range and power, his soul does pierce through his voice straight into the audience. he has trained for many years since he began and is very smart about the way he uses his voice. may someday i be able to meet my vocal inspiration.

Posted by Dave:
Does Tim Commerford have an education like what did he do before he was in rage

Posted by Steve:
The hype surrounding Audioslave is justified...They are a great band, a band that can and will beat the test of time. This reviewer must have not heard the record i did or seen the show i did. He misses the point...Audioslave are are Audioslave...not Ragegarden..and they are here to stay.

Posted by Dwight:
What's wrong with the hype? I'm glad Cornell still has it. This alblum deserves the hype, after listening to it several times it gets better and better. I don't know of any other band that comes close to this, I think he did his homework on this. We've been needing this for a long time. I don't want this to fade away, keep strong, and he'll come out with another record that will blow this one away. Thanks for your time. Dwight

Posted by Interloper:
I think you missed the point Dan. The whole of Audioslave is certainly more than the sum of it's parts. Chris, Tom, Tim and Brad have managed to transcend their roots to become something better, more musically well-rounded than any of their previous efforts. I appreciate their efforts to flex their musical muscles on tunes like "I am the Highway", while remaining true to their rock-and-roll roots. Afterall, who wants to listen to 14 tracks of "Rage Against the Garden"? If they had nothing new to contribute then what would have been the point? I predict that Audioslave have shown the elements of a true superband by branching out and breaking the mold that the listening public would cast them in. If egos don't get in the way I believe that they will show us incredible staying power in the years to come.

Posted by Ashley:
dang, chris has an awesome voice, an awesome face, and an awesome body, he will go far in this buisness, because i will support him all the way. I love this band, and their outlook on things!

Posted by SuburbanCaveman:
Audioslave=ROCK OUT MAN!! i will go to every show possible. there is something about Chris's voice with rage's backbeat....there is different ranges with Chris' voice and it makes ex Rage members so harmonic and their growth as a whole is amazing....

And I sincerely hope in my bones that this is not the last to be heard from this magnificent melding of genius.

The album is definitely a rocker but I did and do expect more from these individuals. Audioslave sounds like a RATM/Soundgarden mix with not much originality, I hope they do better next time around.

I love it Chris's voice is awesome

Posted by martin the drummer:
"audioslave" are the best band since incubus came out

Posted by The Great Heidinni:
Angelica must be either part-retarded or 12 years old to say that Chris Cornell is not very talented. I'd recommend you listen to everything he has put out... including his rendition of "Ave Maria" on A Very Special Christmas 3--and then try and say there is anything "not very talented" about anything this man can do. Seems to me that you would have to have been born yesterday to make that sort of intelligence-lacking comment. Did you know that Chris Cornell was a drummer for so long and one day when he was ina band, he decided to "try singing" and just realized that he could sing. If you listen to the song Loud Love, or anything from Badmotorfinger or earlier, you'd be amazed that that voice just "came out" one day on accident without a voice lesson. And how can you bag the lyrics? Man, I recommend little kids to learn and understand more about musicians and people in general before you make a negative comment about them. Otherwise, I do not feel the reviewer of this album did it very much justice because he seems to not know very much about either of the two bands from which this band was created. Bottom line: Amazing album, and I would expect nothing less from some of the most amazing musicians who are still around. P.S. There is no such thing as the best band in the world.

Posted by Angelica:
Hello everyone, and welcome to the best reveiw on this whole website. That is (obviously) because this reveiw is about Audioslave. IN MY OPINION, I think Audioslave is one of the best bands out there. But that is just me. About the members, I think that Chris Cornell is a good singer and eveything, but he does not really seem that talented. He rocked in Soundgarden, and I think he will rock on in Audioslave. Tom Morello is awesome with the guitar and I don't know what he would do without it. I did some research about each one of the members and this is what I found out about Tom [Morello]: When he was in preschool, a little white girl started to call him some racist marks. Although Tom did not know what this meant, he told his mom about it and she explained it to him. Then the next day when he went to school, the little white girl started to call him racist marks again and he got angry and yelled, "Shut up! Whitey!" and punched her in the face. I really admire him for that. *People have always been racist to him, his whole life. Dumb a**es.* He first realized that he wanted to play the guitar when he heard a KISS song. He went to some guy and asked him if he could teach him how to play. The guy asked for five bucks and first taught him how to tune the guitar. The next week Tom came back, coughed up another five bucks, and was taught the C scale. That was all he needed. Later on in his life when all his friends went off to Harvard to become lawyers and doctors, he went to Los Angeles to form a rock band because that was were all rock bands were formed, right? Right. And he met up with a few people and got into Rage Against the Machine and now is in Audioslave. (duh). Let's see... Timothy [Commerford]: He is awesome with the bass, and I have some information on him, too. Uhh... oh yeah. He vents his feeling through art, poetry, and drawings. Tim does not like police officers because of what they do to people, and he draws pitures of what he would like to do to them. Don't worry- this is a rare side of him. His mom was a mathematician, and his father was an aeronautics/space engineer. His mother died for brain cancer and when she was diagnosed, his father got a divorce and remarried. The family kind of disinagrated after that. That is all I can remember. Last but definently not least, Brad [Wilk]: Brad had a really rough/tough childhood; all his father cared about was money, not the important things in life, like him. Brad says he will never put a lot of value on money, since his father was so obsessed with it and it was all he cared about. His father died during the Lollapalooza season in 1994. Brad cares very much for other peoples feelings, not just his own. He says, "I just sometimes wish I could be a f***ing a**hole." I'm not quite exactly sure what that is supossed to mean, but who cares. Yup, that's what I know. If anybody wants me to post my whole bio about them, which I'm sure nobody wants me to, then you can tell me. I think this album is pretty awesome, and I'm really glad I bought it and I can't wait until they put out another one. I got a free poster with it!! (I know I'm obsessed.) Well, that's pretty much it, and if I have anything else to say, I'll post another big chunk of sh*t for you guys to read so you can sigh and murmur to yourselves about how stupid I am, but you don't have to tell me because I already know. ROCK ON AUDIOSLAVE! Later. :D

No doubt that Audioslave is one of the best bands out there right now. Actually, besides Metallica, they ARE the best band out there. That is prbably because they come from two awesome bands. For those of you who don't know: you can go to bensragesite.iwarp.com for information on RATM. DOn't worry- that site isn't mine. I'm not advertising or anything. I don't know of any Soundgarden sites that you can go to, though. I have made up bio's for each of the Audioslave members, yes, I do know that I am obsessed, and yeah. If anybody wants to talk to me or yell at me, or evn talk sh1t about Audioslave to me, then you can email me at doofusonwheels@cox.net. And for Chris Cremble: I have heard of Theater, and I went to their concert last night, but I've never heard of Dream Theater. But what's with the fluckin Nelly and Eminem comments? Just because we say our opinion, does not mean we are hypocrits dumb ass. Oh, sorry. Didn't mean that. I just get mad sometimes. Ok, I'll leave now.

well, some time has passed and after seeing them live 5 times in 8 days I have to say as much as I love the cd, (and I also have the demos, I know, BAD TOSH) but they kick it so hard live, you just have to see/hear for yourself. Chris has such command over his audience and his voice. He is confident and let's face it girls, he's so easy on the eyes...oh, sorry. The entire band is having such a great time and it's just so obvious AND wonderful! They're reaching all ages and I think they will REALLY hit it after their 2nd album comes out. Their froshman effort is a great beginning for a great band that as Chris will tell you, plans to be around a long time making lots of records. long live Audioslave. 6/10/03

Too flat and predictable... where is the political motivation that made RATM the explosive band that it has been? Chris Cornell is a good singer but he´s sung it all before in the early nineties, as have millions more after him... The mega-band really isnt in the mood for experimenting, hybridizing and moving beyond their past... Apart from a couple of decent, trax, i cant see the point in buying it... better off downloading the mp3s...

Posted by Bill:
I'm sorry, but I have to say that I can't believe anyone could have a bad word to say about this album. That any convergence of two huge bands could result in a half decent album is amazing in itself, but to have a debut release with so many powerful songs is phenomenal. I was not, and never had been a fan of Chris Cornell, or Soundgarden for that matter, and being an absolute diehard Rage fan I was distraught to hear of their acrimonious split with Zack. However, it has to be said, Cornell brings to the Musical foundation of Rage which Zack never could, namely Flexibility. Yes, "Cochise" is an old fashioned rock out, and along with tracks such as "light my way" and "gasoline" it cast more than a passing resemblance to a Zack fuelled RATM song, but then it's only Cornell's, and the musical entourage's ridiculous ability to gel that allows equally powerful, yet less in your face tracks such as "I am the Highway" and "Like a stone" - the guitar solo which in particular must remind everyone of why Morello is considered THE most innovative guitarist of his generation if not ever. One final point. Rick Rubin has done a fantastic job on this album. The louder you listen, the better it gets. One point I must concede is that this could be audioslave's only album. The musical genius gels nicely, but given time will the ego's? Howvever, if I was in Audioslave, the only reason I would be loathe to release further material would be for fear of it being virtually impossible to improve standards beyond this ridiculously good debut. P.S Good luck to Zack in the future. Your passion will never be forgotten.

n the end, the trial in Albany never confronted the explosive question that lay at the heart of the case. If the unarmed Amadou Diallo had been a white youth instead of a dark-skinned immigrant from Africa, would he be alive today? "Race didn't become an issue during the trial," says attorney Johnnie Cochran, who got his start prosecuting cases of police misconduct in Los Angeles long before he ever heard of O.J. Simpson and who briefly served as a legal adviser to Diallo's family. "It was like there was a big pink elephant in the room and everyone acted like it wasn't there." That is why the not-guilty verdict left so many black New Yorkers feeling no justice and no peace. It is also why the Rev. Al Sharpton, for all his flaws, has become the man they turn to when they think they have been victimized by racist cops. Sharpton believes the all-white prosecution team from the Bronx district attorney's office botched the case by failing to offer rebuttal evidence and treating the defendants with kid gloves. "Heck, man, I could have asked better questions than that," Sharpton scoffed after a gingerly cross-examination of one of the accused officers. "The prosecution failed to raise a lot of issues that would have given the jury a better sense of what they were looking at. They never made it clear that many white cops come into the city thinking that they're going into the jungle to tame animals rather than serve the people." Such bluntness, says the Rev. Floyd Flake, a former New York City Congressman, has so enhanced Sharpton's stature that no Democratic candidate would think of courting the black vote without his endorsement. But Sharpton's flamboyant image and checkered past have made him an easy target for right-wingers to use against their political enemies. For example, after Bill Bradley assailed George W. Bush for hustling votes at South Carolina's Bob Jones University, which still bans interracial dating, conservative pundit George F. Will homed in on Bradley's meetings with Sharpton. Noting that Sharpton "associated with a colossal fraud in the Tawana Brawley case," Will asked Bradley in a TV interview, "Are you comfortable around him? And why?" Bradley ducked the question. That's one reason I wish Sharpton, 45, had the courage to apologize to Steven Pagones, the white former prosecutor he falsely accused of kidnapping and raping Brawley. Admitting that he did Pagones an injustice--and paying the $65,000 defamation judgment Pagones won against Sharpton last year--is the right thing to do morally. And it would make it harder for Sharpton's critics to deflect his message by harping on lingering doubts about his character. When I made these points to Sharpton, he replied, "You may be right." But he insisted that he won't even consider apologizing unless he loses an appeal of the slander verdict. It's a big mistake, maybe even a sin, to wait that long because at his best Sharpton has the makings of a moral leader. You could sense that as he stood outside the courthouse in Albany to appeal for calm. "Let not one brick be thrown, not one bottle be thrown," said Sharpton. "Those that believe in Amadou should not betray his memory by acting like those who killed him." That's the kind of talk New York needs to hear as it searches for answers to the questions that were not asked at the trial.

You know what would be an original band in content compared to the bands of today.... if a band came out that was the opposite of RATM in political views. you know if they came out with the same power, effects that RATM did. most bands today are liberal... nothing new. only RATM was a hell of a lot more direct and did it different. so if RATM was a direct socialist band in content... then wheres the opposite of that .... a direct capitalist band in conent... that talks about freedom, liberty, equal oppurtunity, support for troops, support for big business and support for all who do for themselves to better them selves and not look for handouts all the freakin time??? which bands will do it? thats the ultimate rebellion. hah

(I play the drums, too.) But have you seen his muscles? They are HUGE!! I also love Rage Against the Machine and Sondgarden. I STILL can't RATM broke up! They kicked some huge a--! Zach de la Rocha was the king of rock! -sigh- But I do think that Brad is hotter than Chris, even though Chris is really hot. is anybody going to see them at Lollapalooza? I was going to but it was too expensive. That sucks! Audioslave is my favorite and the best band EEVVEEEEEEEEERRRRRRR!! (EVER).

The entire album rocks, the only bad song is "hypnotize" which is pretty sad with the Synthesizer, Cornell is level with Rocha, a well needed turn for the band.

I feel axactly the way you do with the "punk" bands Rage Against the Maiden.

Posted by Mike:
My main choice of music is 90's rock. Nowadays, it's tough for me to find rock, or any type of music for that matter that has the same vibe as that genre. That's why it is so releaving to hear Cornellhowlin away. It really brings back memories of real grunge/alternative music in the 1990's.

Posted by Xanthos:
When I first heard the album I was concerned that everything I had been hearing about the album was pure hype. But I realized I was just being the average tool and just playing the music without truly listening. Once I actually listened through the album I bought $50 of Shrooms and found the meaning of life, then I forgot it, but I grew a new respect for the album. Once you really listen to what Chris is saying and get into the music there is nothing better than it out right now. People who are expecting some kind of hybrid between the two former bands may be dissapointed. That's exactly the point, if you listened to some of Chris Cornells solo work and put rage music in the backdrop then you're getting a little closer to what Audioslave really is. They are truly great!

Audioslave is one of my favorite "new" bands. I think Tom Morello should do a little more soloing, not the wammy bar, effects laden "interludes" he does on this album. Not to say it's bad, but to me something's missing with such a cool riff and then he turns on a delay w/wah and hits the same note for 30 seconds. Athough, I'm not sure he's capable of playing anything but cool riffs. That withstanding, Audioslave still rocks.

I think that grote is exactly the kind of dumb*ss self-aggrandized powderpuff that would listen to about 1/2 of two songs before slopping out a zero opinion and then use smiley faces to rate with. All his grandstanding about what he thinks he knows about the history of these guys adds up to another zero. where they came from and where they're going so distracts from that sick sh*t that's comeing whomping out of my speakers right now. "captures the spirit of the original bands" is probably exactly what AS does NOT want to do, so if Grote thinks they missed the "mark", then they're probably relieved. As for me, i gotta be careful when I'm driving and have this CD playing. The louder the better. all of it.

Posted by Manstis1604:
Oh and by the way, McReady's leads are more prominent on Riot Act than they have been in a long time, he played some of his best solos ever on there. Listen to Get Right and All or None, Mike McReady is still at his best. That whole album is just brilliant in my opinion, I'd go as far as to say that it's Pearl Jam's best overall work, with Vitalogy being a close second (Ten is overrated, and Vs. is VERY overrated).

Posted by Manstis1604:
Damn, some great albums have come out lately. You've got Audioslave, Pearl Jam's "Riot Act", Jerry Cantrell's "Degradation Trip", the Foo Fighters "One by One". Finally, the future of music is actually looking good!

Posted by Darkmonki:
I'm quite surprised at how popular this album is here. To me it's no better than the worst Black Crowes album. It's just southern rock, and not even great southern rock at that. I bought this CD, listened to it once, and have yet to return to it. I, like the reviewer, was suckered in by Cochise, unfortunately. Save your money and buy some Led Zeppelin instead. Basically sounds the same, but much better.

What an amazing album. Finally a band that are gonna breathe some life into rock! Theres not one song on this album i can honestly say i dont like, and personally slow, melodic numbers dont normally interest me. However Cornell and Morello click on those slow numbers (I Am The Highway, Getaway Car!) Theres so many different styles and ideas in this album its hard not to agree its the best rock album of the year so far.

Posted by Pie & Mash:
Seriously, there are alot of personal issues being aired over these pages, lets stick to the facts, Audioslave renewed my faith in music, because i had almost lost it, so much terrible stuff around at the moment it was extremely depressing. The Slave album is sheer class and i've been spreading the word to everyone i know. THE PEOPLE NEED TO HEAR THIS. On a final note, keep the political issues to Question Time, Newsnight and all that gubbins, just rock to the tunes that Cornell et al produce. Worth £10 (or £14) of anyone's cash!

first of all that guy demcrats suck is so stupid. We need more bands like RATM that not only have talent but that send a message. I heard some of the new audioslave and I'm a fan although chris cornell (no offense and I'm not trying to diss him) will never replace the tight ass sound or.. yeah rapping that ZACK DE LA ROCHA did. you people should listen to some rap... it pure talent and bomb ass beats. Rock is ok to but to many bands have ruined it. Well I think Chris is doing a good job working with the old RATM guys. And Democrats Suck f**k you you're probably white huh. Well mumia is on death row because he was a former black panther. You don't know what it is to be colored. cops are on you 24/7. Free mumia and peltier power to the people and power to the oppressed. i meant to say that it doesnt include older guitarists who are still around, i meant the guitarists who are in these new rock bands

Posted by Wright Street Assassin:
i was really impressed w/ audioslave. i was a fan of both RATM and soundgarden, and i thought that audioslave didn't directly sound like either. as far as music today goes, it's terrible. there's blink 182, linkin park, disturbed, and all that sh:t. it's refreshing to hear a rock album today where the lead guitarist knows more than 3 power chords. audioslave has something that other rock bands don't today...TALENT. im not proclaiming tom morello as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, but he's light years ahead of anyone else out there today, and that doesnt include good guitarist's who are still playing today like peter townshend and slash , etc.. i give it an A- only b/c i think they can still be better, but still the best album to come out in a while.

Posted by ROCK~GENIUS:
WHOA WHOA WHOA! Wait a minute...Where do you get off saying ANY Disturbed song is better than ANY Audioslave song??? You are seriously out of your mind. Disturbed has maybe 2 or 3 O.K. songs...thats it! Get a life listen to real freakin music.

Posted by ROCK~GENIUS:
First of all anyone who can knock Audioslave is a moron. Would you rather hear some corny ska or group like blink182? All those whiney punk bands sound EXACTLY the same...HORRIBLE! Or maybe you like those losers from Linkin Park..Yea they suck. I say the hell with that crap. This is real rock music. Chris Cornell is amazing, I saw Audioslave live and it was the best show I've ever seen. Tom Morello is an absolute GENIUS on the guitar. Wilk and Commerford were amazing too. These guys are the only hope rock music has right now. Puddle of Mud, Nickelback??? Please, they are seriously pathetic and thats not rock music. Oh and to the jerk that has bad things to say about mike McCreedy...get a life buddy. If you honestly think he can't play the guitar you must not listen to music very often. He may not be wailing on the axe in riot act or Binuaral like he has on previous albums, but if you ask me its because of Vedder. Don't get me wrong i think eddy's great, but as he ages his strange ideas seem to become even stranger. PJ still rocks though. Bottom line, Audioslave is the "Last Remaining Light" for rock music.

THEIR SO-CALLED MUSIC IS NOTHING BUT HATRED FOR THE GOVERNMENT THAT HAS MADE THEM FREE AND ALLOWS THEM TO BE ABLE TO SPEW ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT PROPAGANDA. ALSO, HOW COULD ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND SUPPORT A CONVICTED COP-KILLER WHO MURDERED A HUSBAND AND FATHER DOING HIS JOB, IN COLD BLOOD BY SHOOTING HIM IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD AND THEN THE FACE? JUSTICE WILL BE THE DEATH OF MUMIA ABUL JAMAL AND THE SILENCING OF HATE GROUPS LIKE THE FORMER "RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE" WHO IS NOW "AUDIOSLAVE".

Cornell's voice is amazing, Morello's guitar makes pure music sound! Brad, Tim, they are all very talented guys. I love the lyrics and their sound is very refreshing to hear.

Posted by meatwad:
i believe Audioslave is a bit underappreciated. The album was their first as a newly formed group and the songs were spread out to indicate the talents of everyone. At some point Morello will play down so you can hear cornell's wonderful voicve and other times Morello will go on a solo. Throughout the album there are flashes of brilliance. The only way we'll know is to wait for the next album and don't judge the members from their previous bands. In this album the best songs would be "Exploder" and "Set It Off". When I first heard them, I had to play it again to figure what was going on. If they can have more great songs like that, there's no stopping Audioslave-ry.

All the songs in their own way, are amazing.

I agree with those of you who miss RATM's relentless assault on Uncle Sam´s gut eaters, but I also think Audioslave is a nice change of pace, and although they are capable of a whole lot more, this album reaches heights that are seldom reached in these days of vines and hives and jimmies eating worlds.

Posted by jackass:
Great stuff. Tom's "efx junky" nature notwithstanding, his solos are some of the most original stuff out there. I'd give it an A- just 'cause I know they can do bettter. Though some comparisons may be made to SG, a better one would be between the more melodic, "average" elements of Audioslave and all of Euphoria Morning (Chris' solo project). Seems like his style has just shifted a bit.

Posted by Duty Pants:
My husband and I heard this in front of the Warehouse at the mall. We urged everyone to gather around to hear it and they did! Thanks Audioslave!

Stands alone as a great disc. I would give it a B+. Great musicians all across the board. We all know they've got a great vocalist, but yeah, that too. Some songs seem to droop down to 'average', but their talent forbids it. Okay?

That reviewer is a moron.... they sound much more like thayil, shepard and cammeron? thats stupid. soundgarden was a hard rockband audioslave is soft rock band. There is nothing hard about them. Kim Thayil is 100 times the guitarist that tom morello is.. Tom is just a fx junkie.. Have you ever seen a kim thayil solo tabbed out? No have you ever seen toms stuff tabbed out? or coarse. So thats crap when people say that he takes his skills down the kim thayils level.

Awesome album! Whoever says that Audioslave is R.A.T.M. with Chris Cornell singing is a moran. This is not R.A.T.M., nor Soundgarden - this is Audioslave! Why don't people get that?! This is the best album of 2002 (I know it's 2003 now). Buy this CD! Tom Morello's solo on "Shadow of the Sun" has got to be one of the best guitar solos in rock history - it blows my mind. I don't know how he does it. The only other album I listen to is Injected's "Burn it Black". And if you don't have that album, you need to get it as well.

its not bad aint nothin like RATM but compaired to other bands atm there mind blowin

This Cd is kick ass. Im A Fan of both RATM and Soungarden. Tom Moralleo is an awsome guitar player and chris coprnell is a awsome singer. Go buy this album

Checked out the album again and im gonna go buy it now :P

Its a good effort , but it sounds less like ratm accept for few tracks . Being a RATM fan , 2 things i missed in the album r the vocals of Ze La Roche & RATM's style. There r no track that can be compared with numbers like Bomb Track,People of Sun,Rnegades of funk ,Pistol grip Pump, sleep now in fire .... Some songs in the album sound like RATM , but for cornwell's vocals. His soul vocals just dont sound good with RATMs music . I hope dudes (Tom,Brad & Tim ) have more of RATm in their next album. LOng live the spirit of RATM.

You know me, I have to be a tool - Dan, Temple was NOT an overhyped "supergroup" who had one release and faded. They were unknowns when that came out in 1989 or 90. It was re-released after "Nevermind" hit the jackpot. OK, now that I've busted some chops ;-) - this is definitely at least a 4 star effort. Who else has put out anything this rocking this year? QOTSA? Foos? Both good CDs, but this CD kicks!

Posted by I Love Chris Cornell!:
This is the only band that's actually good in this year of 2002. This album kicks ass! It's definitly one to buy.

As much as a i loved both R.A.T.M and Soundgarden, this album is just like Rage with a new singer. Wasn't what i thought i thought they would be at all. Which could be a good thing to some people but i PERSONALLY (note : personal opinion, not generalisation) thought they would be. Not as original as i thought they would be but they seem to have a lot of fans and enjoy what they do but i hope they do well since.

I'd give it a four! This CD is awesome!

Posted by .......:
I tend to agree with VampireRyan that this album deserves at least a four... in fact I would give it a five for sure... this album kicks ass... it is the best new album I have heard in 3-4 years

Posted by southofheaven:
Oh yea but i'd still place DISTURBED's believe above AUDIOSLAVES release believe it or not

Posted by southofheaven:
RATM's self titled was pretty damn awesome. The following albums went a bit downhill, but this album comes up with some solid rock to remind us we dont need Ze La Roche to have the rest of the Rage boys rock on. Ps: Morello is a genius on his guitar

Posted by Music Lover:
I agree with the post below. This is rock...these guys use guitarrs...these guys rock! How many new bands these days can be described the same? Just a bunch of wussies who like to wear their caps on backwards and pretend they are Vanilla Ice.

Posted by Mr. huh? saying, "My Generation Sucks!":
It's true that this band does fluctuate between Soundgarden 2 and RATM minus political songs at times. Still however, this is far superior than most of what is called rock and metal these days. My favorite two tracks so far have been the solemn "Like a Stone" and "Shadow on the Sun" (especially than incredible guitar solo).

Posted by TVSmusic:
Of course the album lives up to its hype. One of the best singers in rock teamed up with the now legendary Rage members. How could it not work? What ever Chris Cornell touches turns to gold, in my opinion. I just love Tom Morello's guitars. Awesome.

3 out of 5?!?! Yeah right. This cd deserves at LEAST a 4. Its brilliant vocals and guitar work are what got me hooked. ROCK ON AUDIOSLAVE!! (still kind of wish they were on tour and would come to my hometown).

Posted by amazed:
The solo on Bring em back alive is the greatest thing I've heard since any squealing Nirvana solo!

Posted by the voice of reason:
really boring, i listened to it, and the sound falls kinda flat (fyi: the new SOAD album is nothing to rave about, though i'll still probably buy it).

Posted by che vandrael:
Bought the album. There are some great tracks, the lesser tracks being the quieter ones. Being a BIG fan of RATM I was hoping at least half of the tracks would be politically motivated, but alas it appears i'll have to remain a bigger fan of the unheard Zack than of Audioslave. Sigh... chevandrael@hotmail.com

This album completely blows my mind. Best I've heard in 3 years... period.
